I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time

    Pros

    1) Very smart, personable, and down-to-earth colleagues
    2) Opportunity to work on varied types of engagements/clients
    3) High profile clients
    4) Opportunity to take on responsibility and do meaningful work from early on in career - not too much in the way of "busy" work in my experience so far.
    5) Good place to develop sought-after technical skills.
    6) Large firm resources with a boutique firm feel.
    7) Compensation is fair, good benefits.

    Cons

    1) Lack of consistency in Consultant experience by practice, region, and even at an individual level.
    2) Easy to get pigeonholed into working on the same client/engagement indefinitely.
    3) C-suite does not engage with lower level employees (;interested to see how this plays out after the upcoming change in management). Still seen as an "old boys' club".
    4) Slew of acquisitions resulted in lack of a unified culture and ambivalence as to where FTI fits into the market - broad and sometimes uncoordinated array of service offerings.
    5) High turnover rate among the most talented lower-level staff.
    6) Promotions/raises/bonuses are not adequately merit-based.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make everybody happy (not just the MDs and SMDs) and you'll see higher retention and development of a more unified culture.

Current Employee - Director In Healthcare Practice in Atlanta, GA

I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

competitive pay opportunity to travel 100% of the time (hint of sarcasm)

    Cons

In the Healthcare practice there is poor advancement at the Director level on up; the firm consistently fills Managing Director and Senior Managing Director positions with rejects from the Big Four consultancies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify your loyal "A" players and grow people from within; learn to appropriately identify and share sales credit; start evaluating staff based upon accomplishments on the client site (e.g. implement client executive feedback surveys) not on the typical politics which exist in this and pretty much every consulting practice

I worked at FTI Consulting full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefit package for insurance is good, PTO can be good but managers frequently deny requests

    Cons

Travel on holidays, will be asked to cancel vacation plans
    Nonexistent project management
No training budget = no training
Leaders show up to socialize and be on phone with other clients - theye don't come to solve problems or assist staff in problem solving

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring your kids and their college buddies. Have one standard that applies to everyone - too many exceptions for those in management's favor.
