I worked at FUJIFILM SonoSite full-time

    Pros

The best part of the organization is the people. There are some amazing employees striving to develop cutting-edge, point-of-care ultrasound for clinicians. One such group is the Experience Design Team (XDT). The XDT comprises industrial design, human factors, interaction design, and user information design. This talented group of creative and driven professionals is assisting the organization in charting the future of ultrasound in order to expand the positive impact it makes on the lives of patients. Other high-performing groups I had the pleasure of working closely with include systems engineering and regulatory affairs. Additional positives include: good compensation; matching 401(k); excellent health insurance (medical/dental/vision); new facilities with an open-office floor plan; subsidized breakfasts and lunches; and a casual dress code.

    Cons

The biggest challenge that SonoSite faces, in my view, is leadership. I understand they are facing a confluence of problems with increased competition from new entrants to the marketplace, decreased medical device reimbursement, an increasingly aging product portfolio, a disillusioned workforce, and unrealistic expectations from FHC in Japan. Unfortunately, it seems senior management’s decisions and actions, are at best insufficient, and in some cases, perplexing. Specifically, there is lackluster vision, no discernable strategy, deficient internal communication, an inability to make hard decisions in a timely manner, and a general lack of focus that has permeated through all levels of the organization. It has been nearly four years since FUJIFILM acquired SonoSite and the result is a relatively unsuccessful melding of Japanese and American business cultures. When paired with three different CEOs (Goodwin, Fujitani, and Higuchi) in less than two years, it makes for an unstable work environment. Additional negatives include: excess meetings; little opportunity for advancement; and growing talent erosion now that the economy has strengthened.

I worked at FUJIFILM SonoSite full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits Package and Workspace is better than average. Very nice open office.

    Cons

The WORST middle management and supervisor micromanagement ever experienced. No trust to follow through to completion without constant babysitting and condescending comments and emails. Over the top expectations for hours worked set by those that work up to 16 hours per day (including weekends, paid holidays and late into the night) schedules without batting an eye, and cannot possibly be met by all who have other obligations. Those that don't are not favored or rewarded equally. This is the norm. Obvious favoritism in many groups leading to unfair treatment of those not seen as burning the candle at both ends. Those not choosing to live at work are "not as reliable, not team oriented and not thinking of the company first". HR is almost useless as they are very good friends with most middle and upper managers and go so far as to spend social time with many of them regularly, which makes a very non neutral party for employees needing to get guidance re: issues and concerns. Many hardworking people have been pushed out and not listened to with valid complaints and concerns about leadership and harmful styles that have left deep scars on many teams throughout the company. Alot of turnover. So many bosses, cannot possibly keep track. Bully type scare tactics (mgmnt)/ sideways backhanded comments used to intimidate and push down those that do speak up or have something to say. Obvious tension and underlying issues between supervisors/ management personnel, which trickles down daily to general staff and makes for a very uncomfortable day to day environment. Those who have worked here 5 to 10 years +, still no pay increases or rewards after so much tenure, and many reasons given as to why there is no money. Seems to be that in order to succeed, you need to behave like a school aged child and employ tactics such as backstabbing and the like. This behavior is not discouraged in many groups and runs rampant. At times it's exhausting. It ceases to get better now that Fuji has taken over. We are all just a number and can be replaced at any time

    Advice to Management

Retrain your managers and supervisors and teach them the LAWS re: employment. Don't swear at, belittle or treat your employees rudely. Be a grown up and manage like one. One of these times, someone's going to report the obnoxious behavior and it's going to become a bigger issue if someone reports to the state or records a conversation. Be reasonable and understand that people can be valuable team members, without giving up their lives.

I have been working at FUJIFILM SonoSite full-time

    Pros

The people are passionate and believe anything is possible! "it can't be done" IS NOT in the vocabulary here. Yes, we have been stagnate for several years but that has brought about innovative ideas and the ability to see them through. Being acquired by FUJIFILM has allowed us to think forward and make it happen. Great benefits, great open concept floor plan, and a great team of people

    Cons

Communication could be improved between levels of management. No telecommuting. Work life balance needs to be a reality and that includes telecommuting one or two days a week.

    Advice to Management

Engage the employees. Get out of your comfortable lunch groups and get to know the employees by sitting with them at lunch. Talk to them in the break room. Listent o them and then Learn how to motivate them. You'll be surprised what happens!

    Pros

The Experience Design Team (XDT) is a small but talented group that works to design all the touch points between our brand and users. The group is mainly comprised of UX / UI, ID, HF, and user docs. The company as a whole tends to take an empathic view of NPD and values research and exploration. The XDT team is young but has made huge progress in its first few years under strong leadership. The group is creative, fun, and driven with a shared vision and goal to make our products truly great. We have great resources, a beautiful studio, and leadership that empowers team members to do their best work. More than anything, working to define the future of a potentially lifesaving product is extremely rewarding.

    Cons

The only cons I have experienced so far are consistent with working at any technology driven organization and not exclusive to Sonosite.

    Cons

This company continues to change positions, products, programs, benefits. No stability. Management is poor. No guidance. High turn over in sales dept.

    Advice to Management

Provide employees with proper training and guidance to do their job. Don't keep changing their path every couple months and taking benefits away.
