    Pros

One of the best companies to work for.

    Cons

FactSet is in Norwalk, CT. It is only good for people who are living in the towns along South Highway 15. Traffic is a concern if you are living in other areas.

I have been working at FactSet full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

some great people, minimal politics (considering the size), friendly work atmosphere, decent work/life balance, good benefits, at least tries to be fair.

    Cons

Pay seems opaque and arbitary. As a manager, hard to reward top performers without punishing the 'merely' decent. Metrics are important but so is the story behind them. Sometimes feels like 20% of the people do 80% of the work. Increased willingness to cut corners to get product out the door.

    Advice to Management

with growth coming back, compensation adjustments should follow suit. whilst the market helps, its the current employees that are helping capitalise. Be open about pay structures across different departments. The secrecy only leads to rumours and wrong perceptions. More professional training; in-house can do the basics and product training, but bring in specialists for more focused training.

I worked at FactSet full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent food in the Norwalk cafeteria. You get $8/day to spend on lunch. It's enough for an entree and a drink. There are kitchens on every floor with free soda, snacks, coffee, tea, etc. All software engineers get a decent laptop.

    Cons

They mostly hire people straight out of college and train them the way they want them. Consequently, as an experienced engineer, I didn't have much opportunity to work on new things. I got stuck in a boring group working on boring libraries. I asked to be transferred several times to no avail. Since most of the people don't have much industry experience, they make some stupid design decisions. Everything has the "must be built here" syndrome, including the web servers that run the new application infrastructure. That's just asking for security issues. The pay is not quite competitive for experienced engineers.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Shake it up and try to go after new markets

I have been working at FactSet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay, great benefits, friendly environment, and challenging projects. FactSet doesn't really have a "startup culture", but it still hits a perfect point just between "startup" and "corporation". You feel like you're important, but with the backing of a company that is conservative and constantly growing incrementally. Work/life balance is really great, you're not expected at all to work over 40 hours.

    Cons

Debatable if this is a pro or con, but lack of startup culture. We don't have ping-pong tables or anything like that, but maybe that's a good thing. I wish it was just a little more though, for example, we only do a hackathon once a year, and participation isn't super high.

    Advice to Management

Increasing pay even more would be beneficial to prevent the poaching and attrition that you're seeing as the job goes on. Put a little more emphasis into the hacker culture, even if development practices stay the same.

    Pros

Pretty Flexible hours, client exposure, young staff, casual environment, very friendly people and overall pretty fun. Good entry level job.

    Cons

Mid/senior consultants are under valued, low pay for responsibility load, management on consulting side is scrambling to keep morale high

    Advice to Management

Your employees aren't ignorant and have had a foot out the door for longer than you think...

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at FactSet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - A very young culture in Software Engineering (most hires are straight out of undergrad) - Great opportunities to develop yourself at the start of your career - Talent at FactSet is actively recruited by companies like Google and Facebook. - The cons won't directly affect the early portion of your career at FactSet

    Cons

    - The company is transitioning into a large company, and is struggling with how to manage the transition - Upper management doesn't know how to handle employee feedback. Speaking up about problems can lead to negative consequences, especially if it points out issues your management chain is trying to hide. - There is some resentment of software engineers by the non-engineers at the company (who make up most of FactSet's workforce). The resentment stems from the fact that the engineers are paid more despite having lax dress standards and flexible hours. Software Engineering's management doesn't know how to deal with this problem. - Complaints about the "old boys club" from other reviews are still valid.

    Advice to Management

Very high level managers outside of Software Engineering would do well to talk to the low level developers of problem projects to get their impression of what's going wrong.
