Overall Fairfax County is a great place to work

    High School Teacher (Former Employee)
    Falls Church, VA

ProsTechnological resources are wonderful, the technical training opportunities and supports you receive as an employee are outstanding. Benefits are also excellent.

ConsTuition reimbursement for teachers pursuing masters or doctorate degrees could be improved. Some administrators are only working on their second retirement.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen an administrator only has three years of actual teaching experience, they really do not have the knowledge and skills to be an effective administrator. Require all assistant principals and principals to have at least five years of teaching experience and have them be better mentored.

Well, it is better than waiting on tables...

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYet, like waiting on tables...you eventually move on to something better.

ConsConundrum: When applying for position FCPS states --Supports FCPS mission to "inspire, enable, and empower students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives, and demonstrate responsible citizenship."
Yet, how come you ask teachers to do many unethical things like focusing on everything but creating inspiring lessons? You have teachers so busy with minutia and "data entry" that only the most seasoned teachers know the difference.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember where you came from. Have some integrity and backbone.

The county offers many opportunities for advancement for its employees.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsEvery employee and teacher that I encountered were professional and interested in the well being of the children.

ConsThe only challenge would have to have been the bureaucracy of such a large employer but there is no way around that one.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat all employees well and the children will respond well too.

Proud to be both a former product and professional of this pubic school system!

    High School Teacher (Current Employee)
    Springfield, VA

ProsIt was a stimulating learning environment from the view point of both a student and a teacher.

ConsThe administrative staff did not support the concerns of the teachers nor the students to the best of their abilities and often chose to ignore direct and valid requests for help.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the feedback from your staff and students, learning can't take place when there is discontent in the classroom that your role is expected to address and find solutions for.
