    Pros

Fairfax County Government is a joke. It is racist, communist, and they hate women. And that's the good stuff.

    Cons

Bad working relations with managers, elected officials, judges, police, school superintendents, and anyone else you can think of that works at this hell hole are horrible managers.

    Advice to Management

    Start Over

I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting work at a large organization. Many people that work for the county are extremely professional, talented and dedicated individuals that provide high quality service at a very low price for taxpayers.

    Cons

Pay raises are few and far between since the economic downturn in 2008. Also, cost-of-living salary increases are very infrequent since then. Maybe twice between 2008 and 2015. And when they've been given, it's 1-2%, not the annual 3% rate of inflation. The result is that employees working for the county during the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s (when they received regular raises and COL increases) are paid well. All others receive low salaries. For example, an employee who started working for the county in the 90s might get paid $90,000 while someone in the same position, but hired after 2010 will be making $60,000.

    Advice to Management

Re-institute regular raises (if merited) and include regular COL raises that are equal to the dollar's annual rate of inflation. Or come up with a different system for compensation. Otherwise, morale will continue to plummet and work product will suffer as a result. Taxpayers will get less quality service. Also, for my department (Planning and Zoning), for senior management, they really need to promote employees with MANAGEMENT skills. Unfortunately they promote planners and zoning professionals into management positions who lack basic, fundamental management skills. Bad management harms work product.

    Pros

If you are thinking about your retirement, Fairfax County is a good choice because benefits are good. If you perform your job at a marginal level, you can definitely keep it and even advance.

    Cons

I worked for the health department and now DFS, both were the same. New ideas are not encouraged or even welcome. Preserving status quo is all that matters.

    Advice to Management

Please, please, please look at DFS. I beg of you. Personal friendships dictate what happens at the top. Staff are asked to "speak the truth" but these truths are ignored unless the senior directors agree with them. Trust is nonexistent. Nepotism and cronyism abound.
