I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia

    Pros

Great place to hone your trial skills - you will be trying felony cases within a few months of being hired.
Willing to hire people right out of law school.
You are given a lot of responsibility very early on in your career. Challenging cases.
The police officers and detectives that you work with are very smart (most have college degrees) and do a great job preparing your cases.

    Cons

Compensation is stagnant. Don't expect a raise in your first 5 years.
The supervisors are very good trial lawyers but not great people managers.
Most of your work is individual; you rarely work with other prosecutors on cases.
You will be in misdemeanor court every day for the first year, with no days off.
Expect to work 50-60 hours a week. No overtime pay.
Pro/Con: The office culture is VERY informal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assign two attorneys for felony jury trials instead of just one person.
Do performance reviews more often than once every 2-3 years.
    Put all policies in writing.
    Be more open to change.

    Pros

Room for advancement and multiple disciplines.

    Cons

Supervisors are not trained to engage with employees very well. They are all looking up leaving behind the core staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care and interact with staff. The backbone of the department is not you.

    Pros

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. All the perks of working for a local government. You can join the union if you choose. Once you're in with the county, you can take advantage of frequent opportunities for lateral and even upward movement (although you will be competing).

    Cons

The Self-Sufficiency division is highly stratified. The higher-ups don't care what front-line workers have to say, and middle management are too concerned with advancing in their careers or retiring early to stand up for the workers. You are just a number. There is some favoritism.

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with, many of top directors are very smart and care about their work and citizens, Great work life balance.

    Cons

Like any government, some bureaucratic laziness and some people didn't care about their job; The pay was low compared to many other jobs, but the work was very compelling and intellectual.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and pay more so people will stay longer. Get rid of the employees that don't work. Many people would be willing to work a little more.

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Amazing people who are driven and work oriented and a great transition into the working world. I worked in a small office and everyone played a substantial role in developing partnerships for local non-profits.

    Cons

My biggest con was the fact that I was only able to work 25 hour weeks and I would have liked full time employment if that had been a possibility, however funding was minimal and that is the way it turned out.

  11.

I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

For social work its one of the better paying jobs without going federal.
    Great benefits.
Good vacation options and retirement plans.

    Cons

There could be better unity between different departments within the Community Service Board.
There have not been legitimate raises in over five years in the CSB.
Can be difficult to move up to hire positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the employees who deserve raises, raises!
