I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Longevity of employment. Opportunity for growth

    Cons

Retail is retail, long hours and more work than the average person thinks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the education and growth opportunity for employees. Hire more full time and pay part time a higher wage and benefits. This would help employees be able to stay with the company longer and offer future growth for the employee and pay off in longer term employees, internal growth and bench strength for the company.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Used to be a great company to work for, was there for many years. But that has all changed. No pros now.

    Cons

With new senior management came a mandate to evidently "purge" all those with several years of service, presumably to lower costs. Nearly every middle manager and most senior managers who were there prior to 2009 have now been fired or "eliminated." There was a big effort to change the "culture" when all they really wanted to do was eliminate all experience and hire "friends" of new senior managers who had been unemployed and knew little to nothing about this business. The political game is alive and well at Family Dollar. Don't disagree with anyone of a higher rank, or you will be eliminated or made so miserable that you will want to quit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't know where to start. At this point, it is pretty much hopeless. You have gotten caught up in implementing "initiatives" and have totally forgotten who your customer is. The processes are never ending and serve no purpose other than to produce a lovely powerpoint presentation to upper management.

    Pros

Co Workers & friends I met over the time I was there.

    Cons

I thought it was a good company who cared about their employees until the 8th year when they handled an investigation totally wrong with me. Made me believe they didn't have my back. Luckily I found another job with a way better company

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people that I work with are wonderful.

    Cons

The benefits are less than subpar. There is not much upward mobility unless you play into the company politics. Senior managment has poor judgment and sense of direction. Senior management also micromanages every process and every decision made down to how much product is ordered. The work/life balance is so terrible that I have to take a vacation day to work a half day. There is so much work to do that working from home one day a year is looked down upon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the people you hire to do their jobs.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of exposure. Big company that, theoretically, has a lot of opportunity.

    Cons

Ridiculously high work volume and manual process that make everything frustrating. At least in merchandising and supply chain, the majority of the middle managers are in their 20s and early 30s. They know nothing about how to manage effectively and are too arrogant to admit it. Upper management turns over every couple of years because, well, that's how upper management works at big publically-traded companies. Overall, it is pretty much a zoo, but FDO is a good company to have on your resume. Just know that no matter how much lip service the company may give to your "career development" (and they do love to give lip service to "succession"), ultimately you own your career and that will likely include moving to another company within 2-5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation, vacation, and work-from-home policies are starting to really lag the competition. Do another one of those completely unclassy rounds of mass layoffs and you'll be sure to be no one's employer of choice.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The staff member work hard to make it an effective organization.

    Cons

Processes are less than professional. In experienced management and director level staff make it extremely difficult for external hires to make an impact because the current staff lack exposure to what other organizations are doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shift manager and directors into to roles that more accurately reflect their skill set

    Pros

Weekly pay, benefits to other stores discounts if you want to buy anything computers, clothing, shoes, trips, even a nice phone discount if you're with any of the 4 major phone carriers.

    Cons

Running a store sometimes with just 2 people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and look out for your employees more if you want to place your stores in the ghetto.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company has a very warm and friendly work environment. The management team, especially the vice presidents and divisional vice presidents are very helpful and available to help employees troubleshoot issues. The work can range from routine to challenging and you have a sense that you are making a difference in your area. Your co-workers are very helpful and willing to help when you are challenged. The company does a great job of offering family friendly events and values the employee through yearly service awards and holiday appreciation dinners.

    Cons

The pay structure is significantly lower in some of the areas than the comparable retail competitors, both in the town and nationally. There is not a lot of advancement for the employees to move across departments and many employees are looking for other positions. Senior management is unaware of the characteristics of their shoppers and does not understand the struggles they go through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to invest heavily in your employees and develop talent better to promote the candidates that work for you
