Poor training program.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for less than a year

ProsSome employee perks and discounts.

ConsWork alone a lot! Skeleton crew while expected to keep up on projects and new schematics while conducting day-to-day interaction with customers and vendors and maintenance of the store.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave traveling trainers. Increase the budget for stores to have a good size crew to work out freight and do projects. Budgets should not be a one size fits all stores in the district. Should go by sales and size of store and community.

Not enough payroll to make the store run smoothly.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time

ProsThey don't hound you for the small things, at least my DM does not.

ConsWay, way, way to many hours. Homelife is non-existent.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe hours to run the stores are very limited. Also, the inability to order merchandise and cut orders of merchandise can make or break a store. Who is going to sell 100 pillows in a short amount of time. Instead the pillows take up a small spot in the non-existent stockroom. As does the 3 uboats of overstock dog food, the overstock HBA products that are to be held in a repack box, and left open to be certain it gets worked. Oh, and let's not forget the time managers are required to focus on LP matters. LP is important, but lets face it, where is the time allowance for all this coming from? The Store Manager. Always dangling a carrot with promise of hours, but never pans out.

Great opportunities, if you're willing to work 60, 70, 80+ hour weeks nonstop with little reward

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Binghamton, NY

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDecent salary for Managers, if they work enough hours

ConsLittle culture or values, Fires women because they're pregnant or have children, tries to get around earned bonuses, no free time, on call constantly, little to no management on higher up levels

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a consistant brand with strong family values as the company name suggests, and you'll have better loyalty from employees.

Worst Company Ever

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

ProsSOME of the employees that work there are very hard workers just like I was and that was a pro that they were willing to do anything it took to try and keep up with the disorganization and poor work environment.

ConsPoor payroll, Not enough security or payroll to catch shoplifters and if your inventory is bad they automatically think you weren't trying to stop shoplifters, put untrained managers in a store to run it, district managers NEVER come and help make things better..i.e. when you NEED more security in a store that shrinks out EVERY year and you BEG for more payroll or security to help solve the inventory problems along with they make you do that as well as the ONLY assistant or store manager in the store for 4-6 HOURS straight ALONE.. not a safe environment for employees. As well as catching all of the shoplifters, ringing up all the customers, providing GREAT customer service and putting out freight all at the same time for the MAJORITY of the shift.. way too much work overload on managers as well as the blame getting put on the WHOLE staff for the THIRD year in a row that the store shrinks out--instead of CHANGING things, they discharge the WHOLE staff AGAIN. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE!

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of trying to cover yourself, try helping to SOLVE the situation before it gets out of hand. MORE PAYROLL, MORE SECURITY. QUIT BEING CHEAP!

never worked so hard and felt so broke

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

Prosjob security, constant change means constant work for the store manager, very promotable company, you can move from a cashier to an assistant manager to a store manager in a short time if you are motivated to do more.

Consno payroll, full time assistants barely get any hours, too much change in merchandise, no time to really work with your employees and really teach and train them, 6 day work week.
