    Pros

    Free online training is available

    Cons

Inconsistent messages from management. Little to no direction. Harsh reprimands. Departure from clinical best practices in favor of profit. Zero transparency. No value of personal time. Does not support healthy boundaries. Low pay. Nor possible to please superiors. Fear culture.

    Pros

The people that are attracted to social work are the best people to work around that is for sure.

    Cons

The company and the management abuse the employees on the regular. There were conflicting messages on working overtime, impossible case loads and no help from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Family Preservation Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The counseling field is a very meaningful area of work. Developing relationships in the community and among co-workers is a plus.

    Cons

Executive Leadership values money over clinical integrity. The push is to grow/sell with little emphasis on managing the clinical aspect of programs. Leadership often hires based on friendships. Inequality of pay among people in similar positions. It is difficult to maintain a positive work-life balance at this company. Very little is spent on developing staff through trainings or education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

State Leadership should develop employee morale. Practice what you preach--FPS is a strengths based agency but leadership does not focus on the strengths of their staff, they only focus on the weaknesses. Very little respect is given to staff by State Leadership. Lots of turn over among Regional Management.

    Pros

    co workers are generally great
    schedule is ok

    Cons

The pay is WAY low for the amount of work that the employees are expected to do and for the level of education that is required.
Management consists of arrogant queen bees that have no people skills and absolutely no clue of what's going on.
The clients should come first, but all this company cares about is money, very much to the clients and employees disadvantage.
Employees are pushed to work extra hours with the promise of extra pay, but then there are a million excuses as to why there is no extra pay in the end. The school counselors have the option to work during the summer, but are threatened to lose their job if they don't work. Pay during summer is just slightly above minimum wage (and this is for a master's level and in many cases licensed counselor)
The company is losing clients and employees left and right, due to the fact that competitors provide better service and care. This company is not going to last much longer!
Employees are not appreciated and treated like dirt. Management is unprofessional and looks down in a very degrading manner on anyone below their level

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

appreciate your employees, they are the reason you are making the (undeserved) big bucks.
Raise the pay and provide some decent benefits. Better yet, find a new job - in a different field and let someone competent do your job!!

    Pros

co-workers are the only positive thing about this company

    Cons

everything!! Considering the level of education needed for any jobs with this company, the pay is pretty pathetic. The benefits totally suck and recent change in management turned the last ounce of hope for this company into a total disaster. They give a crap about their employees and only care about profits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring about your employees and clients, or you will go under sooner or later! Employees are leaving left and right and the bad reputation is locally known among competitive agencies and customers, which is why you are not getting contracts. If you increase educational expectations, start increasing salary!

Former Employee - Adult Therapist in Asheville, NC

I worked at Family Preservation Services part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The work is meaningful and the clients are interesting. The other therapists are all great: supportive, friendly and hard working. They really care about the people they work with.

    Cons

The pay is miserable. The hours are very long. Although the company provides supervision, it is very uneven in quality. Management is focused on profit and not on client welfare "get them in and get them out" is the philosophy. The technology resources are minimal. Communication between management and the therapists is inadequate, slow and often misinformed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees with respect and clients with compassion.

I worked at Family Preservation Services full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Free supervision, plenty of opportunities for clinical growth. relatively speaking, fps offers a wide range of services in a region (Asheville) where mental health services are poorly lackingada

    Cons

24k base salary is beyond ridiculously low
    toxic work environment
they are a FOR PROFIT organization, profiting on the backs of lowly paid masters level therapists and the medicaid funds of clients served.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

raise the pay for counselors by about 10k per year and your turn over will lessen. company vehicles for staff that must work in the community. staff laptops with appropriate software. make the office a more welcoming environment.

I have been working at Family Preservation Services full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The only positive thing that WAS in place was setting own hrs. I'm not sure it applies when you have to send your daily schedule to the office.

    Cons

    Inconsistency across the board
    Lack of direction & training
    No mileage pay
    Low pay
    Company's expectations are unrealistic
    Managements' attitude lowers morale
The office is in Kernysville where there is a lack of transportation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a procedure manual for each individual office.
Staff your office with people who want to work, not complain
Outfit the office so it's welcoming- including appliances
Ensure the office is CLEANED, stocked, and utilities: water, phones, and internet are in working order
Have a computer system in place that is current and applicable to the job.

    Pros

    Great co-workers, somewhat flexible schedule.

    Cons

Working in unsafe conditions often going to homes that are dangerous and unsanitary. In-home and Mental Health Support required to use own car and paid mileage rate from early 1980's (.30 p/mile)- we were told that we were lucky to get this as it was NOT required although other agencies in the area pay .50-.55.5 cents per mile. Upper management staunch with communication problem. Uncooperative with a huge amount of work performed at home (which you are not compensated for). Company DOES NOT seem to care about clients and their welfare at all--only looking at profits:(

    Pros

Flexibility, environment, gained knowledge, benefits. FPS is a great work experience and you learn SO much.

    Cons

exposure to dirt, filth, feces, bed bugs, and dangerous neighborhoods. The pay is low and does not compare to state agency salary although program is a state sponsored program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Putting yourself at risk and going into a family home without knowing the situations that can occur in the local area is dangerous. Better compensation is needed to justify spending long hours in unsatisfactory home conditions in unsafe neighborhoods.
