I have been working at Family Preservation Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers are wonderful and supportive, noble work, good benefits, lots of down time in the summer, free continuing education online, able to make your own schedule and it can be flexible as need be

    Cons

Pay is low and they continually decrease it, many barriers to actually doing counseling, tons of paperwork that is never ending, considerably company bureaucracy, long hours during the school year, very high and unreasonable productivity expectations, under lots of pressure from supervisors/managers to meet the unreasonable and unattainable productivity, productivity is tied too much to salary and most of the time productivity is out of the therapist's control, redundancy in paperwork

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder to understand how difficult your employees' jobs are and what it's like to make such little money but having such an important job and an expensive Master's degree to pay off. Try to find a way to have a reasonable salary instead of low salary + commission; the stress in not being able to control our full salary is very difficult at times.

I worked at Family Preservation Services full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The branch I worked for in Verona, Va was wonderful. The camaraderie in the office really helped with some of the isolating feelings that could accompany the job. Can make your own schedule as long as you are meeting the hour requirements.

    Cons

Job can feel isolating at times. Hour expectations were unreasonable and unattainable. Closer locations were promised but never came to fruition. So much paperwork, it was very difficult to separate work from personal life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advocate for employees to Corporate to help them understand better what it's like for each individual employee instead of just another number. Lighten the load that is put on supervisors so they will be more available for the in home counselors; especially since the counselors deal with many crisis situations.

    Pros

If you like to work with kids with behavioral issues, this is the perfect job.

    Cons

~You have to answer to your boss as well as the principal of the school.
~You almost feel like a middle school babysitter.
~If your child (that has behavioral issues) gets in trouble, the principal will blame you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set guidelines for principals and counselors.
