    Decent place to work

    Video Store Clerk (Former Employee)
    Lowell, IN

ProsIf you work here, you get half off your video rentals. The pay is to be expected (around minimum wage). It's a good place to work at if you truly enjoy digital entertainment and enjoy interacting with people.

ConsI was on call quite a bit which ruined alot of my days. I'd stay home and wait until i'd have to call in and ask whether or not i should come in, and most of the time i didn't. To work in a place like this, you have to like who you work with. I didn't really like my manager or district manager while working here. They seemed to not care about the employees, but rather seemed to just worry about their own well beings.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe managers need to show more compassion and interest in their employees.

    Terrible company!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Sulphur Springs, TX

ProsI enjoyed getting to watch pre-streets as well as some commission for sales.

ConsThey encouraged off the clock work, worked employees full time hours but refused to promote anyone to a full time position. There was really no moving up in the company. Also, there was no sticking up for employees. When customers actually cursed at me for doing my job, the store manager made a point of apologizing to the customer for their frustration... No breaks or lunches. Had to eat in front of customers. Often was overworked due to the system that tells you how many people are allowed to be on shift at that time. Also, the on call shifts were terrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake better care of your employees.

DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY

MIT (Manager In Training) (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

Prosonly good for teens or college students

ConsThey make it seem as though there are alot of career opportunities but the truth of the matter is because those career opportunities are available because of high turnover. Some of this turnover because in the eyes of the company you are disposable. If you do not perform to their liking wether it be your sales or they do not think that you smile enough or say high loud enough they will replace you. This is for store manager levels and below. The other reason for the high turnover is most likely because they practice slave labor.

One would think that in that during the 4 interviews that I endured that someone could have warned me that they do not give a lunch break or any sort of break at all. This may be ok for the part time employees but I was hired as an MIT. As an MIT, you work 9 hr and 12 hr shifts. During this time you do not get any break off of your feet what so ever. By the end of my 1st 9 hr shift I was unable to walk from one end of the store to the other because of a knee injury. My knee was swollen and and feet were pounding. The store manager looks and me and asks me if I am going to be able to make it. I explain the injury and how I should probably get off of my feet for a minute and I am told that we don't get breaks. Yet the employees or managers that smoke can go outside pretend to sweep the walk way and smoke. It only took a week for me to realize that I would rather go work for WalMart. Yes, it is that bad.

It would be a great opportunity for a young person who wants to gain experiance in management and can withstand the long hours with out any breaks.

Also, if you have any sort of peircing, tattoo, or colored hair ( any sort of hip hair, not necessarily a non hair color) they will not hire you. They want business professionals to work in a video store that rents porn. I am still having a hard time wrapping my finger around that.

Advice to Senior ManagementReevaluate your policies. Allow people who are eclectate and who express themselves with a tattoo or small peircing to work in your stores. You rent porn. This makes no sense. Do you really think it is only business professional men who watch porn. In today's day and age if someone works 9hr or more they should at the least get a 30 minute lunch break. Watch out. Walmart was sued for this and the people won ( in ALL states) and were awarded back pay for all breaks they missed. If I had the energy or money to waste taking you to court, I would sue you for it as well.

Want to be taken advantage unappreciated and fear if your next to be let go? Apply Today!

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Olathe, KS

ProsFree rentals for managers and some staff if meets store/managers goals
all team member get 1/2 price game rentals
Rent movies before they are released (if you get them in and dont have to buy them)
    One on one customer interaction

ConsOpen 365 (they don't care if its a holiday or if there is a blizzard and the city has declared a state of emergency and all are ordered to stay in unless it is an emergency, they store must open...)

They do not offer breaks in anyway. this means if you are scheduled 9+ hour shift you are working that entire 9 hours, you do not get to sit down at all so you are staying on your feet the whole time and as for meals you will be eating at the back counter restroom breaks if you are alone fingers crossed no one robs you or hold it until your next person is in 4 hours later.

All building/yard/land maintenance is on the manager... So hope you have a good knowledge of plumbing, electrical repairs, building repairs and upkeep, and landscaping. Additionally be prepared to not get paid for these projects if you come in extra or cant do them during your shift you are working the counter thats why they have you do it they don't want to actually have to pay people for services rendered. But it saves them money!

Movie Buys: Each store is required to do weekly "movie buys" this is when the managers/employees go out on the morning of releases and buy tittle to stock the store. No problem right? Well here is the problem, you are not compensated for this if you are a manager. Why? Because they don't count it toward you required open hours that you have to meet each week. So why not have a full/part-timer do it your DM will tell you it is required to be done by a manager. The reality is they don't want to have to actually pay full/part-timers to do it. The best part is that most of these movie buys will require to go to as many retailers you can get to and buy as many copies of this movie the retailer will allow at one time to stock your store. This can result in an incredible amount of unpaid mileage and unpaid hours to get this done. but it must be done and your DM must know it is done by the end of that day that the title is released, and no, they don't care if it took you 6 hours to get all of the copies of said movies and and you drove more than 150 miles and went to 8 different cities to complete this on your day off… Just get it done and email/text them to verify.

District Managers (DM) openly brags and will be proud of the fact she/he can make or break anyones career based on their personal feelings toward you, you better enjoy kissing up and being irritated to see the people who may not be the strongest employee but is the best at kissing up succeed and progress faster than others that don't operate that way and want their hard work to promote and speak for them. Due to the fact that DMs are the ones in primary contact with your Regional Managers (RMs) the RM will have no idea this is even happening and the DM will brag that they have His/Her ear anyway so good luck trying to convince them otherwise.

Stores getting on of their newest developments (Marco's Pizza) you will be the last of your DM or RMs worries. Their main focus will be the pizza place they will not give you their undivided attention on any day they are scheduled at your store so be ready to do majority of your DMs job for them as well and not get recognized, thanked, or paid for this. If you have a store that has any issues to be resolved figure i out on your own because if you don't they will put all of that on you even if you express that you need help to solve the problem and have openly and repeatedly asked for help and support.

Advice to Senior ManagementRegional Managers (RMs), or even home office should do more accurate evaluations of their managers and ask the team that is in the store everyday their experience or views on how your Managers and District Managers are doing. i think you would be surprised by what you actually find out.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsFun
    Relatively easy
Always hours to be had if you are looking to earn more money

    ConsCustomers are demanding and unappreciative/rude
Company encourages empowerment to the employee but doesn't follow through with it
Open on holidays, so if you are a college student who lives out of town you are SOL
Getting called on off days to come in or called on days you are off to come in

Advice to Senior ManagementHire enough workers to alleviate the stress of always calling other workers to come in when they are off. It's highly annoying and results in high turnover.

Use scare tactics to get follow through with employees.

    Store Manager (Former Employee)

ProsFun meetings. Teach you to operate your own business, you learn everything from interviewing, balancing the store bank rec, time management, sales and coaching staff. Very educational.

ConsWhere do I start.....first off upper management would threaten your job to try and get you to complete tasks, this only works on kids and pisses off the people that work hard because they actually enjoy working. Just give me tasks and we will get done no matter what. Second, management is expected to come in and do a movie move on their day off, which upper management said should only take 4 hours. Well working there for 4 years the fastest one took me 16 hours with the help of my assistant manager. This was once a month. Third, I was promised promotion for 3 years. When I would complete the "only thing" holding me back from the promotion they would come up with a new one.
The max they will pay salaried managers is 30,000. So they start everyone off 24,000 - 26,000. In the time I worked there I only received one raise and it was 1000.00. The years after that they used the excuse that I had a promotion in my future. Even better they had me running two stores without compensation for a total of a year and a half, because I "ran my home store so well, and had a promotion in my future". When they did finally start to pay me for running two stores it was 1% of the other stores revenue, it was a low volume store, so after taxes came to around $150.00/Month (would not even cover my gas I spent to drive to the store 3 days a week).

Advice to Senior ManagementSee my cons and fix. At least pay people what they deserve so they want to stay.
