I have been working at Family Video part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great fellow employees, company is growing, flexible hours, accessible Manager-in-Training program, and opportunities for commission.

    Cons

Different schedule every week (hard to plan), unrelated to my studies, no lunch break or chance to sit down for shifts over 8 hours.

    Cons

no breaks or lunch if you work alone

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

allow breaks, don't let only one person work at the store at a time, and be more willing to hear your employees out.

    I worked at Family Video

    Pros

Free movies was a big plus. They seem to be growing and are training managers for new locations.

    Cons

It's customer service so you will run into some interesting and sometimes angry people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going. I'm surprised that movie rental stores are still a thing but glad they are. While I left the company for a better job, I would recommend Family Video to someone looking for a job in the retail/CSR field.

I worked at Family Video part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent opportunity to grow within the company. I worked up to shift manager within a month. They offer MIT (manager in training) programs for those looking to take the next step. There is room to make bonus commission by selling 1/2 off memberships and candy. I was able to earn over $300 in commission in one month working part time. A fun job that provided great interaction with customers on a regular basis. If you enjoy a fast paced workplace with a strong customer service focus then this is a great company to work for.

    Cons

    Very low pay
    Inconsistent hours
    High employee turnover

    Pros

It is a great company to build sales experience and gain leadership experience. They will work with you with school schedules and are very flexible.

    Cons

It is tough working nights and weekends sometimes but that is what comes with working in retail. The biggest complaint is working holidays but most you are compensated well for.

I have been working at Family Video

    Pros

Flexible hours, Decent pay for entry level jobs, Discounted/Free rentals

    Cons

Many part time employees tend to be immature and have poor work ethic, so you can get stuck with a majority of the workload. Closing with only one person at midnight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company says customer service is number one so it should be. Managers shouldn't just base hours off sales; it should also include the better employees.

  11. A hyper-competitive sales environment for minimum wage.

I worked at Family Video part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good co-workers, hours are easy to give out since they are extremely over employed because they are "always hiring." The movies are NOT free (only discounted) unless you are one of the top employees in sales.

    Cons

If you are not a top sales person in the store you will not get any hours. On top of this, you will not receive any significant commission on the sales you make. You will not receive ANY kind of breaks (even for food) no matter how long your shift is (not even entirely sure this is legal). At least in my area, we typically had very rude, shady customers in rather bad areas. They have a terribly bad management pyramid to the point that some locations do not have managers for long periods of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do NOT only have two people working while the computer clearly states four must be on duty. Suck it up and take the wage losses otherwise lines get tremendously long leading to unhappy customers. Compensate employees more for all of the sales pitches we need to make and memorize in order to get any hours. Update your computer system, it is nearly 10-15 years old and is almost impossible to learn without good training. Give employees breaks, it is absolutely disgusting to have to eat in front of customers. Why do we have to wear a shirt and tie when we sell pornography? Nearly impossible to become a manager from the full-time sales associate position due to the INCREDIBLE amount of politics that go on in this system. There is a reason McDonald's receives better ratings from employees. I implore you to take a few lesson on management and training on their behalf.
