I worked at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay, friendly staff, easy to build rapport with regular customers. Start out making more than minimum wage and performance based raises are simple to pass.

    Cons

Not understanding of busy schedules outside of work or prior commitments. Some managers and customers are difficult to maintain positive relationships with and shifts can be long (9 hours) with no breaks.

    Advice to Management

Add mandatory breaks for certain numbers of hours worked (e.g. 15 minutes per 3 hours)

I worked at Family Video part-time

    Pros

The work was fast paced at most times and varied. Going in to each shift was a different experience every day.

    Cons

Inconsistent scheduling for part-time employees. There were days I went in for a 2 hour block. Very minimal pre-work training; "on-the-job" training scheduled for busiest hours which often lead to co-workers simply performing the task instead of training. Being on-call and expected to call in only a half hour prior. It's a video store, not a hospital. Very low pay.

    Advice to Management

The barely over minimum wage pay offered is not worth the job. The 3-interviews and skills test required for employment means that while you get great candidates, highly qualified people typically don't stick around low-paying jobs for an extended period.

I worked at Family Video (More than a year)

    Pros

The interview process is quite extensive in order to work at family video. As a result, the employees are well qualified and wonderful. The customers are there just to rent movies and have a good time.

    Cons

The biggest con to working at Family Video is controlling payroll. You have to schedule some part-timers to only work 4 hours a week because that's all we can give them.

I worked at Family Video full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The ONLY pro was free movie rentals!

    Cons

So many Cons, so little time... As a manager for Family Video you are required to work 44 hours a week while the store is open to the public. However, they also expect you to accomplish tasks prior to the store being open (without being paid), such as; going to the bank every morning and getting change and bank deposit slips, going to super retail stores and buying their copies of popular movies - then going back to FV and "re-packaging" them to put on our shelves for rent - if there was an expected high demand for certain movies, weeding flower beds, trimming hedges, sweeping the parking lot and picking up garbage, shoveling snow off of the sidewalks in the winter. Not to mention the other tasks that were expected of you - scrubbing toilets, taking out garbage, manually changing the marquee sign outside, changing light bulbs, and ballasts, fixing broken doors... the list goes on and on and on. In addition to actually dealing with customers and transactions and making schedules, dealing with hiring and training staff. They expect you to be a jack of all trades. The pay isn't very good, and they are constantly shifting managers/district managers to different stores. Part time employees are difficult to retain because of the low pay and the large amount of work they require you to do. Also, unless you use your vacation/personal time (as a manager) you are expected to work EVERY Friday and Saturday night between 4 - 8 pm. You are required to close the store (working until 11 pm or midnight) by yourself once per month/quarter (depending on your district manager) and the majority of stores are located in neighborhoods that don't appear to be very safe. I could go on!!

    Advice to Management

Have Managers hours count towards their 44 hours per week, even if it's before/after the store is open to the public.

I worked at Family Video (More than a year)

    Pros

Free Movies before they come out, Half-priced movies, Friendly & personable coworkers

    Cons

No breaks. Must eat lunch/dinner behind counter. If you are not quick or making them more $ you will get in trouble. Too much pressure to up-sell. Long hours with no breaks. Must work in store all alone at times w/ no opportunity to use the bathroom until a coworker comes in. They have a computer system that tells them every 30 minutes if there are too many people working in the store (on average there are only ever 2-3 employers MAX at a time) and will send you home if computer says so. You must work On-Call shifts (you have to call in to find out if they need you and be ready if they do).

    Advice to Management

It's a video store. Chill out a little bit. If you weren't so frazzled all the time the customers would not be either.

I have been working at Family Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun work environment, great co-workers, good customers. I enjoy going to work and don't mind training new workers. Enjoy recommending movies to customers and have strong customer relationships with regulars. Very fulfilling.

    Cons

Pay is less than desired considering the screening process that Family Video subjects applicants to. Poor air conditioning in a hot building makes the retail experience a pain in hot months (for both employees and customers).

    Advice to Management

Air conditioning! Also better compensation for good workers would be nice.

    Pros

Free rentals before they come out. Flexible schedules. Regular customers and awesome co workers

    Cons

You can tell the company is not doing well. Every new policy reeks of desperation. It's a super fun job when your in college trying to earn some cash, but not a career prospect. Full time employees are over worked and underpaid. They don't invest time in to growing you professionally.

    Advice to Management

Re-work the late fee prices. A customer shouldn't have a $30 late fee from a movie were selling for $8. You should cap late fees at the items value.

I have been working at Family Video (More than a year)

    Pros

Free pre-streets, (not yet released movies to the public), the customers, the idea of something free with every purchase. Sales atmosphere but it's movies, candy and popcorn. Get some ice cream or a pop, not alot to sell so, getting those goals are very easy.

    Cons

    Too many to list here.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the sales associates in a non-threatening manner. Giving ultimatums of short hours or no pre-streets is very sad. Pre-streets are the first way to let your sales associates learn about the movie and then give the customer great feedback. Shorten hours just lowers morale and thus increasing the turnover rate, which is enormous!! Cash handling needs to be each individual's responsibility, not the entire crew. Safety speaking, there should be two employees close. Last thing, training. More- with leaders that want to teach.

I worked at Family Video full-time

    Pros

Virtually none at all, maybe free rentals. That isn't much of a pro though, because they expect you to watch all new movies despite working so many hours and whatever else your schedule entails. Do not have a life or family with this place.

    Cons

I cannot express how much I encourage you not to work here. I worked part time during college, then went into the MIT program after I graduated for an entry level management gig. It is awful. Just like everyone here says, there are virtually no breaks on twelve hour shifts. Not even a chance to use the restroom. Nasty customers, people rent porn constantly and you are expected to wear a tie to work. Classless business trying to be classy. The pay SUCKS, and they do not respect their employees. Last minute promotions show that the company is dying-any quickly- so the work environment has dissolved into last stitch effort sales and a pizza place. It's a joke- you will instantly regret working here.

    Advice to Management

Give up already, close your stores.
