    Pros

    Large organization with many opportunities

    Cons

you will be stuck at your level for years... company tends to hire upper management outside

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

culture needs to change to be aggressive in workforce retention going forward. Many miss opportunities from advanced contributors that have been "pigeon holed" into a role without consideration of advancement due to fear of the perfect fit moving forward! Instead the company will lose this talent once a carrer opportunity opens elsewhere

    Pros

Stable, company that has weathered the financial crisis with surplus in tact. Farmers has a great culture where many feel like family.

    Cons

Like many organizations, Farmers has an issue with cronyism, where the best candidate may not be the one chosen for a particular job. Additionally, Farmers has a difficulty communicating what it really wants out of it's people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify what you targets you are looking to hit. Improve reporting in your data structures.

    Pros

Had a very good Sr Mgt before 2003! But went down the toilet ! They need people like Feinstein, Braddock, Feely and many more! They help lead the company to greatness with a very dedicated employees!

    Cons

They need to get back to the basic that they had before the last three Sr Mgt came to power! They lost the Farmers dedication and have mgt that care nothing about Farmers! To many Job hoppers!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Very Toxic Environment to Work At

I worked at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - The people are the best. The Farmers Family is great
    - Salaries are OK compared to other places in Los Angeles
    - You get to learn a lot about insurance and state laws

    Cons

    - Farmers is extremely political environment. You have to watch your back all the time.
    - After a merger a group of incompetent employees took over mid and senior level management positions without having the "Junior" level skills. So you have to take it from lots of unqualified people and be OK with that.
    - It seems like Business and IT team work against each other as if they are in some kind of a war. Recent changes made stuff even worse in some departments.
    - Directors and above in IT, think they own the company and they threat employees like slaves. I hate saying it but its the truth. Some of them have no ethics whatsoever
    - Oh and their recruitment sucks. They won't accept internal recommendations but they end up bringing in the most untalented people (their "friends") for interviews.

I have been working at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Changes seem to be helping a little. At least CCO is a claims guy now.

    Cons

too many layers of management. Managerial promotions never based on merit or results. Anyone above a local manager is invisible most of the time. Zero communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More transparency. They like to say "do what's right". But never allow it. So much damage done by Menges people are terrified to speak up and make changes. Ideas usually squashed by those looking to do nothing more than promote themselves. Saw an obvious idea that made economic and morale sense squashed by someone who didn't want to have less people in their department. Do you hear about the rank and file from your high level managers/directors or do they just promote themselves?? And for the love of god reduce the amount of time we spend on behaviors. More communication needed and transparency to the "state of the business".

I have been working at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Keep this in mind as you read through a company's reviews: pay attention to location, and department. Unless it is a startup, you will not work with everyone. I am in the accounting department at Farmers and the floor is absolutely amazing. Everyone here is very social and more importantly, hard working. Managers allow a lot of room for growth while keeping deadlines in check. Culture, check. Challenging job, check. Farmers offer standard benefits package.

    Cons

HR and training is disorganized, although they do establish great communication. IT department is absolutely horrible. They're lazy and aren't innovative enough to explore solutions for internal operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Integrate tech into company operations. It's a crucial part of process improvement as tech allows room for greater efficiency. The insurance industry itself employs older generation (due to experience) so they are still a bit behind in operational tech as the focus is more on customer service and financial innovation. If management would make time to inspect internal improvements and invest in its IT department, Farmers will shine.
