I have been working at Fastenal full-time

    Pros

Most people you work with are good, hardworking team members.

    Cons

You aren't a true outside salesman. You are responsible for receiving product every morning, loading your truck, helping walk ins, making deliveries, and are still expected to be out of the office by 8 am to make sales calls. Anyone higher than GM does not care about store employees, corporate figures you can be replaced easily. New commission plan pretty much makes you lose money after your first year. All based off growth and margin, if you do not obtain 55% margin for the total month you lose commission. From the CEO Lee Hein christmas letter to employees, " And remember that fulfillment is found in the pursuit of a challenge, and money has very little to do with it."

    Advice to Management

Restructure your commission plan so that you can keep your veteran employees who know the market, product and customers. Oh and just go ahead and keep the box of stale chocolate and chips for our christmas bonus.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time

    Pros

Pay is decent and everyone that is not a manager is nice. A lot of hours available to work if you need to work around school and such

    Cons

You are told that you have opportunities to move up in the company but you are never given them. They do anything they can to make sure you don't get a raise to keep costs low and they DO NOT care about your health at all. The atmosphere is draining and they have the attitude that you're expendable and they don't care if you're okay. This is one of the main reasons why they are so short staffed because everyone that was hired and worked here for more than a month realized how completely awful this company truly is.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees more and actually check up on and evaluate your mangers because they really need to be replaced.

I worked at Fastenal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you prove that you are a quality employee, they are willing to spend big money training you to become an expert in a specific industry.

    Cons

They have a performance based pay system that basically resets every year. This pretty much guarantees that you will make the same money year in and year out. My last year in the position, I was doing double the sales dollars as when I started in the position three years prior and was making the same money.

    Advice to Management

Value your people, especially tenured employees that have industry specific expertise. Letting ten year + employees leave without even attempting to retain them will be your downfall as a company. Quit with the "everyone is replaceable" mentality.

    Pros

Decent pay. Hours were flexible with school schedule.

    Cons

Poor integrity displayed by employees and store manager on customers and regional manager. It wasn't fun working in an environment that I knew my coworkers and boss were lying to customers and bad talking the regional manager often.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a new system to keep honesty and respect in the work place, the current environment is not successful.

I have been working at Fastenal part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you're looking for a part time job the hours are good; there are no evening or weekend hours.

    Cons

Company is more concerned with saving a few dollars than hiring/keeping good employees. They want more part time employees because they're cheaper than full time employees. There is no career potential here.

    Advice to Management

You're not going to get the employees you want by offering them part time jobs with no potential for advancement.

    I worked at Fastenal part-time

    Pros

Opportunity for good hours for part time job and good pay $11 starting

    Cons

Not what the job was explained in the interview. The manager mentioned how underpaid everyone was but still stayed with the company, i think it was because his wife worked at another location. Took job thinking it would be a good full time opportunity out of college. You have to do so much computer training to become full time in sales and get your own deals in which you can only work on it at work which you hardly have any time because you are running the store.

    Advice to Management

Not make it so difficult to become full time and give opportunity to train outside of work.

    Pros

There are not many pros. Some of the FEW are that you get weekends off and workdays are not too strenuous.

    Cons

Poor pay and benefits. Management thinks they are better than you. They place you in a far location without telling you.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and treat them with respect. Training was sub par at best so if you want your employees to succeed this must improve.
