I worked at Fayetteville State University as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed learning about the history of the school. There is a general push to utilize current technology to assist; faculty, staff, and students to obtain prescribed goals. The working atmosphere was pleasant and professional.

    Cons

The downside of this organization is the lack of proper full-time positions, most of the staff is on a annual contract without benefits. The negotiation of a new contract was burdensome with the communication between department seemingly to become non-existent. The use of technology though wonderful was a hindrance since personnel was not fully trained to operate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn what it is your staff does to help you improve the school.

I worked at Fayetteville State University as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Best pay, benefits such as 1 free class if you are on full time staff. Medical, dental and 401K. daycare on campus if you have a little one and preschool. First hand information about campus events that benefit the community

    Cons

Most jobs now are temporary versus full time permanent. Difficult to get a job unless you know someone in upper management. If you use them as a reference when you leave a previous job, the odds of you getting another job elsewhere or on campus for that matter is very small. If someone does not like in upper management, they can make it hard for you to get other employment so it is best to try before you leave and even then at times you don't particularly get a good reference.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It helps if jobs are open to everyone. There have been times when people have been called in to interview when management already know that they intend to hire someone else for the position they are interviewing for. People are starving out here and are in a place of losing everything they have. Put yourself in the applicants position when you are considering someone for employment or letting some go for reasons other than they being a good and dependable worker.

I worked at Fayetteville State University full-time

    Pros

    - Workload is getting lighter due to declining enrollment and a reducing budget.
    - Students do not expect to learn much from class, so faculty do not need to prepare well for teaching.
    - Campus has all kinds of recycling materials around -- You will find used condoms on the lawn or hallway.

    Cons

    - Extremely bureaucratic.
    - Poor IT support.
    - Senior admin does not trust employees (all employees must swipe their employee cards to prove attendance).
    - Budget cut is removing departments and employee positions.
    - No hope for future development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Close the university and return the money to tax payers.
