Pros
Great benefits, flexible work hours, salary is relatively good.
Cons
Bureaucratic, not a lot of room to grow or work your way up the ladder.
Pros
Pay and benefits are good.
Cons
Many young engineers, not much opportunity to advance.
Pros
Awesome management, awesome coworkers, and you get paid every week. It's all about teamwork and that's what we have down here in Pittsburgh. And another great thing is you get paid every week!
Cons
It's a very fast paced place to work it's very cold in the winter hot in the summer, a few slow people throw off the whole sort cause other people have to pick up the slack for them. And you can have late nights getting out of here around 11 so you have to be able to work flexible hours.
Advice to Senior Management
Management at FedEx Ground does a great job of getting a message across and they communicate very well to the workplace. But communication could be a little better but for the most part they do a great job!
Pros
The brand carries itself, no layoffs,
Cons
Long hours, little recognition, no clear direction, no teamwork, executives make bad choices, development opportunities nil, budget cuts, small bonus amounts, very small merits for high degree of work.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the employees
Pros
Nice physical facilities (nice work cubicles, plenty of meeting rooms, building and grounds, gym, cafeteria)
Sufficient hardware and software capabilities and tools to work with
Cons
Lack of insight and just plain competence in planning and designing.
Too regimented in thought (better to "do it as we've always done it" than accept better alternatives), workstyles ("different" from norm/routine is a bad thing), and roles (don't question "leaders").
Perhaps due to the above, while there is a certain level of I.T. competency, there are –with all due respect to many nice people – relatively very few really intelligent/experienced/insightful people there. I became quickly bored and discouraged,
Advice to Senior Management
Open your minds! Welcome the insights and knowledge that might arrive with new employees, including seemingly-despised contractors, and facilitate the free flow of information, knowledge, and ideas. Being a Pittsburgh native, I'm sorry to say this – but FedEx reflects the area's "provincial" way of thinking. Break out!
Pros
Benefits are decent.
Outsiders are impressed by the name.
Cons
1) Poor leadership in place, except for Rebholz, who I believe has good intentions for this company and is trying to steer it in the right direction. He has an air of sincerity that others lack. But one man can't do it alone. They need to clean house of callous leaders and revamp HR so that they are less likely to follow their own agenda and really serve the needs of the internal customer. Put HUMAN back in human resources.
2) Everyone throws eachother under the bus. Not enough teamwork because everyone is too busy Covering their own hides.
3) Each department is working on their own initiative and not so much because it makes sense but because they want to be visible, earn awards, and look busy.
4) Everyone is a number, unless you are MD and above (they are the only ones with photos on the internal site). How about making ALL employees feel valued. Put a face to their name so we are a warmer company. Maybe when we start to recognize eachother in the hub we break down barriers of communication and start to collaborate in the way FedEx wishes we would.
5) Forget about having fun and be prepared to kiss lots of rear ends. That's the way to get to the top.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on your people. Put them first and go to bat for them. It's not about plaques. It's about what you emphasize everyday. Take care of your people and they will take care of the business.
Pros
Up till now the co seemed to be pretty stably and secure. The future of that reputation may change soon. When there is not a hiring freeze the co is great about letting you explore other departments. People have been known to go to purchasing and hr from engineering fields. The co is pretty good about promoting from with in.
Cons
Now that ground has to help out express thought times are a changing. Lately, the co as a whole has had to take a hit for divisions that are not keeping up. Even after that was done freight still incountered a lay off.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more engaging with your staff.
Pros
Overall job stability, good working environment and facilities, it is a respected company,
Cons
there are difficult working relationships across operating companies, do not always feel that your management backs up your work,
Advice to Senior Management
we have alot of new initiatives across the company and some high ideals promoted. senior managment will be the first group tested concerning whether it is just talk of whether they are willing to stand up for these ideals when challenged.
Pros
You get paid to exercise, the job overall is not as bad or hard like everyone thinks it might be. Don't let fast paced environment scare you, it is an easy job. The pay could be a little better, but each year FedEx ground will reevaluate their standpoint on the economy. Depending on how the economy is, each package handler may or may not get a raise (cost of living raise).
Cons
It usually seems that the terminal I work at is understaffed. For the most part though, with the the full time package handler program coming about into the Pitt terminal, more and more people are starting to come into the different shifts. It works out OK, but there is a period of time between the outbound full time, and the preload full time people. Which means for us, OTP, that we are usually very short on people anywhere from 11:45 until 12:30. It is not all bad though, it just depend on when the full timers hit their 7.5 hours for the day. Other than being understaffed, the only thing that I see that could be a downside is you don't get compensation for what you do. $9.40 an hour for the work that a package handler does, I don't think that $9.40 is the right hourly rate. I think that package handlers should be making $11.25 - $12.00 an hour to start. With the recent raises though, I only know of one person who is a package handler, making $11.75 an hour.
Advice to Senior Management
Put people who know what they are doing in certain areas in that area. Don't put a person who succeeds in the unload, but not in the load, in the load side. It does not work, people have their areas of expertise, let them be in that area.
Pros
FedEx Ground is a very secure company. There are also plenty of opportunities for relocation. FedEx is everywhere.
Cons
Ground seems to be very cheap when it comes to pay scales. It seems they try to start everyone at the bottom of the pay scale. It seems like pulling teeth to actually get a pay raise for people who truely are well above and deserving of a raise about 3%. Overtime is pretty much forbidden and is still frowned upon durring peak season. As operations management goes, don't expect to have a life around the holiday season as you will sleep at home and live your day at work, repeat this process up to 7 days a week.
Advice to Senior Management
Take some consideration about the low man on the totem pole. They are the ones that actually physically make sure our business works. Sometimes decissions adversly affect the operations on the lower end. Take the time to get to know the operation from the peoples view. Lets have an open 2 way conversation so everyone knows what is going on and how it is to benefit the company and the employee.
