Senior ECO Import Agent

Senior ECO Import Agent (Former Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I worked at FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFriendly environment, opportunities to move up, and many benefits (Ex: discount on cell service, shipping with FedEx, schooling, etc.).

ConsTraining could be longer, but you will learn a lot in a short amount of time. Don't be afraid to ask questions once out of training. Time-off is based on a first-come first-serve request. Must travel to work even in harsh weather conditions (heavy snow storms), and work on major holidays.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees, and address problems as they occur. Don't mess with something that isn't broken.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Pretty Good Company

Team Lead (Former Employee)
Springfield, MO

I worked at FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage full-time for more than 8 years

ProsJob security, benefits (401k, pension, health) Employees, Direct Report Management, Experience...learned a ton about an industry I didn't know existed.

ConsSlow to advance in the company b/c upper positions have low turn over. Salary was not at market rates..they wanted to pay you like a customer service rep, rather than a customs broker.

If you like to keep your head down this is a good place.

ProsJob stability -- very difficult to lose one's job here.
401(k) employer match is decent.
Health insurance was ok, getting worse with consumer health plan in '14
If you work in a well-managed port, things can be really great.

ConsToo fragmented and different modes don't speak the same language.
Some managers are too divorced from operations and make odd or silly decisions.
HR is out to lunch and some egregious employee behavior is not addressed timely.
Job descriptions don't match actual duties resulting in underpaid and overworked staff.
Compensation is too low for the level of knowledge required to do most jobs.
Training is not a priority despite the increasing demand for compliance by CBP, lots of out of pocket expenses to get the training needed to advance.
Antiquated computer systems - 20 yrs is too long to go without a major update.

Advice to Senior ManagementTime to plug back in and show that knowledge, accountability and performance matter. The Great Recession is over and you will lose good staff as soon as the job market balances out. Fedex makes a big deal about being a non-union workplace but you wouldn't know it based on the rewards given to tenured but mediocre staff. Sometimes you need non-FTN/Tower folks to come in to refresh things and bring in new ideas. There are too many old shadows of the defunct Tower Group still running around over 12 yrs later.

Experience as Import Agent And Import Coordinator _Indianapolis location

Senior ECO Import Agent (Former Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I worked at FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood continued training opportunities amd free broker licenses.

ConsCan move up the ladder but takes time for it to have open positions. Then when you get closer to the top the managers in charge have "favorites" that usually will get the position over "experience" or "knowledge".

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the favoritism.

Great people, growing company, limitless opportunity.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Memphis, TN

I have been working at FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage

ProsEmployee Benefits are good, management is good. The company is growing like crazy so there is ample opportunity to move up within the company pretty quickly assuming you do a good job.

ConsI think they could pay a higher salary to the employees. I guess the company makes up for this based on their employee benefits.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis is a great company with great people. However, it seems like it is run by 50 year old + men. Set up specific growth programs for the younger/determined employees who are the future of the company. Fred Schardt is the CEO now, not Ed Clark.

Work\life balance is good.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at FedEx Trade Networks Transport & Brokerage

ProsWork\life balance, benefits are good.

ConsSome mid-level employees are not as competent as they need to be and should have been let go during the recent lay-offs.

Advice to Senior ManagementNext time you decide to lay-off staff, do it with input from managers. You lost a lot of good employees and kept a lot of losers.
