I have been working at Federal Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good employment source for professionals, when economic growth is slow. Public service offers employees more leverage than employees in the private sector. Not perks - employment safeguards. Great diversity in its labor pool. Salaries vary depending on the geographic area, and some positions are compensated better because of the knowledge required for the job.

    Cons

Generalized less than adequate reputation and stereotyping. It is a bureaucracy. Don't complain if you don't like repetition or regulations. Depending on the agency, nepotism is still a problem. Be careful if you have been in federal service too long: you may be making too much money AND you may be too old for the agency's mission.

    Advice to Management

Look at the hidden talent in your organization. Hiring of managers should be based on much more than sharing similar interests or background. THAT can only go so far. Also, profession new hires should have some experience relevant to the position. Many new vacancies are only for "recent graduates." You get what you pay for.

  2. Choose Carefully

    Pros

Public service, unique occupations. A federal career can take you around the world if your interests, abilities and outlook are a good fit.

    Cons

Congress. Congress. Congress. Every time something goes wrong, someone writes a rule or a policy in response to congressional "outrage" - those layers of reaction make it a tough place to work by placing artificial obstacles in your way. Also, political appointees who don't realize their tenure is short or value the civil service.

    Advice to Management

Weed out incompetent front-line managers. Stop yapping about "leadership" and "innovation" and focusing on "senior leaders" or "front-line" employees. You have a cadre of useless, biased, foolish, insecure people trying to manage. Get rid of them. Stop promoting people like them into management. And start grooming people with some management possibility or talent. Stop just throwing them in at the deep end.

I have been working at Federal Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I feel that this is a rewarding job with national importance, I am able to keep current with cutting edge technology and certifications. Retirement plan is okay and so are the benefits.

    Cons

As a federal employee you become a political pawn for Congress. For the most part, the American people don't care of federal employees either.

    Advice to Management

With the impending wave of federal employees retiring from government, managers should start thinking now about how to cultivate the next generation of public-sector leaders. Although the federal government is facing harder times and shrinking budgets, “every challenge brings an opportunity.

I worked at Federal Government full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits, and yes, actual works does get done in a gov't job. Flexible schedules and telecommuting is a definite plus. TSP gas the lowest fees among any 401k plan, anywhere.

    Cons

Gov't salary does not usually match what the private sector is paying. Work hours can be long.

    Advice to Management

Not micromanaging employees would be my advice to management but overall my experience with management has been overall quite positive.

    Pros

Healthcare benefits are good with the government contributions. You have a variety of choices for coverage. This is a great benefit

    Cons

Limited upward mobility in the department of health and human services, office of inspector general. The agency is ran with an old school mentality of top down management

    Advice to Management

Try to improve the culture as moral is horrible within hhs/oig. Seek ethical training and try to have a more diverse workplace.

I worked at Federal Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

As a Federal employee you can work with the minimum amount of effort and always have a paycheck. No layoffs or pay reductions. There were literally days on end that my shop would spend hours watching TV and still get paid. As a member of the POL shop, the work was very easy and the pay was 3X the civilian pay.

    Cons

Finding work to do. The days can be very boring with not much to do.

    Advice to Management

You're doing a great job! Keep working to keep the base open.
