    Pros

Great medical coverage and leave policies

    Cons

Going to the middle east is required on occasion

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and don't bother people when they are on leave

  2. Chief of Electrical Services

    I worked at Federal Government

    Pros

Beside cutting edge adaptation of current codes and standards, as a service chief I had added responsibilities for testing equipment and staff safety that rounded out my competencies in the electrical field. I also was trained in new technologies such as infrared that gave me a leg up as a technician.

    Cons

Budgetary issues were always a management concern. There were times when my staff could have made facility improvements but because of the way our Federal government allocates money to stimulate the economy those improvements were put out for bid by contract. An example of this was when we found our fire alarm system was not wired correctly and gave bad reports of where an alarm was triggered rather than allow my staff to make those corrections, I had to write a statement of work to solve the problem and it was put out for bid to an outside contractor.

    Advice to Management

Know your responsibilities. If you need further training get it. Be sure your staffs duties and responsibilities are up to date and accurate.

  3. Mgmt Officer

I have been working at Federal Government

    Pros

Job Stability, work life balance, mobility within the workplace, benefits (retirement), diverse colleagues, flexible work schedules, supportive supervisors, opportunities to travel to some unique places one wouldn't normally have. Numerous training opportunities.

    Cons

pressures due to budget restrictions, sequestration, pay freezes, partial hiring freezes and anti-government attitudes among some in the public. Difficult to accomplish activities due to bureaucratic processes. Policies make it difficult to hold poor performers accountable.

    Advice to Management

It is a lot of work to hold people accountable, but put the time in up front and you will have less headaches later.

    Cons

I think its ridiculous that the company response in all cases ignores the employee concerns and only acknowledges the positives. It serves to give validation that maybe the employees have a val8d concern and management doesnt address those needs or even care to improve. I hate companies like this.....and im a customer.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and acknowledge your employees concerns and needs.

Working for the government, you can expect to deal with an amazing bureaucratic mess. Difficult to effect change. Difficult to enact positive change.

    Pros

the benefits are better than most corporations, and probably a lot more likely to remain so for a longer time in the face of escalating health care costs

    Cons

the pay is not great. frequent reorganizations and staff relocations are frustrating and disruptive to the business flow.

    Advice to Management

I suggest that they change office locations less than once every 3 years. this will allow for the contractors to relocate nearby, which facilitates oversight and collaboration.

    Pros

Job security, interesting work. I've enjoyed working on cutting-edge research, and my benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Politics, lack of career progression, nepotism. Good projects are cancelled at whim, while bad projects continue for years. Funding is a constant nightmare. I spend more time working on busywork/paperwork than I do on actual research.

    Advice to Management

Scrap your entire process and hire some consultants to fix your efficiency problems.
