I worked at Federal Realty Investment full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people who work here are very nice and talented. It is a leading REIT so recognition in the industry is great, made finding a new job easy. Free soda and bagel Wednesdays.

    Cons

Hours worked are above average for the industry and pay is below average. Not much opportunity for advancement, no traning provided, low morale, constant turnover. While my experience wasn't bad, it just wasn't a place that I could see a future. The company is focused on FFO and not on it's people.

    Pros

Plenty of work in the pipeline. Great relationships with retailers. High standards. Interesting array of work across many states.

    Cons

Many cooks in the kitchen. Difficult to get a sense for who's responsibility it is to get things done. Work with lots of consultants criss crossing and blurring lines.

The company does excellent work but demands a lot from its employees and rewards high achievers.

I worked at Federal Realty Investment

    Pros

Pays well, smart management, good benefits, good growth opportunities. It's a good place to work for ambitious, hard-working individuals, who are team players and are prepared to work a lot.

    Cons

This is not specific to this company, but it has a sink or swim mentality. If you're not excellent you might be summarily terminated - but that's not surprising.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the company has been well managed and has done a very good job of prospering despite the difficult economic environment.

Solid performance, but horrible employee retention and moral.

    Pros

REIT understands its bottom line and is focused on results. Could be a fantastic company to work for if the firm intelligently communicated and invested in its employees. Unfortunately, this is its achilles heel.

    Cons

Disfunctional interoffice communication. Poor training. Horrendous employee retention rate. While sr. mgt. is great at attaining company directives, little effort is invested in cultivating or motivating performing talent. Many talented individuals leave due to the firm's inability to communicate honestly in a forthright manner. Although senior mgt is for the most part talented, certain key roles are currently posted by "pretenders". A solid firm should be able to recognize such liabilities and root them out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the current darling of the reit world, management's blind eye to employee retention, moral and poor communication will continue to fuel its high turnover rate and negative perception in the industry. Firm needs a basic course is Employee Retention 101. It can balance its excellent FFO performance as well as being a great place to work if it earnestly invested in improving employee retention and communication.

I worked at Federal Realty Investment

    Pros

Great opportunity to really understand a well run Retail REIT. Employees and colleagues are professional and respectful of one another.

    Cons

The management style from the top down is one that is focused on results more than people. In this economy, the company is less of a risk taker than it has been in the past, which is good for shareholders and probably good for long term stability, but hard on the people who are working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Federal Realty would be a stronger work environment if staff were encouraged by senior management to share knowledge throughout the company.
