I have been working at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people! There is a very welcoming environment within any building in the district. The teachers are also very explicit when it comes to leaving notes for the substitues.

    Cons

The students in the district can be a handful.

  2.

Good school system, make sure to know who your principal is.

    Pros

Those who are wonderful are great assets.

    Cons

Lack of administrative support. Zero tolerance is just a phrase that carries no meaning.

I worked at Federal Way Public Schools full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The district is fairly organized and efficient. Many of the administrators seem to know what they are doing. The BTAP program for new teachers is good, and there are good resources at the district level.

    Cons

The district takes on initiatives that are sometimes poorly planned, and the teachers really suffer for this. In 4 years, I've had 3 different sets of standards to grade on, and 3 gradebooks. The change to common core standards has been difficult.

    Pros

The pros are very few; fabulous teaching colleagues, lovely schools and strong families with great children. They all deserve better.

    Cons

This could easily become a "rant", so I'll exercise some control and simply say:
At FWPS, school principals are extremely dishonest, as a group.
There is no oversight or accountability for special ed. administration - they bully and harass teachers, especially women teachers over 40 and women teachers of color.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start paying attention to what your special education administration is up to - in particular the elementary special education admin staff.

    Pros

The kids bring joy and humor into your life; everyday is a surprise.

    Cons

There is no life in the work-life balance equation when you are a teacher.

    Pros

The staff can be supportive, but it is your responsibility to get help. As a first year teacher, the administration will like and keep you if you consistently seek help in a positive manner.

    Cons

The students here can be very energetic, which is typical for most middle schools. The school's culture needs to do a better job on keep their students under control. The students tend to be unmotivated and difficult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More support for teachers

I have been working at Federal Way Public Schools

    Pros

Everyone is very friendly and they will try to help you out the best they can. You get training to know their rules and you get training to take your CDL test. A lot of the kids are nice and you can talk to them.

    Cons

Starting out and being there for quite a few years it will take a while to gain any seniority. So you may be working part time (20-25) for a very long time. You have opportunities to get extra work through middays and field trips, but that is based on seniority. As a sub you can get more hours sometimes, but you don't get any of the benefits or paid holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys are all so caring and appreciative towards the drivers. Just keep being positive and you will be great!

Hard work in an environment that is not respected or regarded as important by management at any level.

I worked at Federal Way Public Schools

    Pros

Co-workers, for the most part, were exemplary. Very well prepared staff, educationally and professionally, to take on the responsibilities of the education of youth. Good attitude of sharing among staff members in many cases and situations. The support staff on the district and school levels proved to be very helpful.

    Cons

There existed a constant lack of respect on the part of management (supervisors, principals, assistant principals) of the teaching staff and the support staff. This lack of respect was particularly evident on both the school site and from the district office administrators, including the human resources directors. Even the support staff had serious reservations and was consistently cautious around and in view of administrative staff at all levels, district and school. There is a strong disconnect between management and worker in many of the schools within this school district.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adminstrators at both school and district levels need to come to grips with the reality that the teaching and support staff is on the same team as you are in the supposed leadership positions that you occupy. The feeling of mistrust and lack of respect that leadership demonstrates is infectious and is a cancer to the overall education process. The leadership echelon does NOT have the best interests of the student(s) at heart, and in spite of all of the "hype" to the contrary, that disrespect really stands out at all levels of "leadership." It seriously compromises the marvelous efforts of most of the teachers and support staff employees.
