Pros
Excellent benefits. The benefits used to be slightly better, but FedEx cannot be blamed for higher costs being charged to them. Health care expenses are constantly rising.
Great pay if you are willing to stay at FedEx for the long haul.
Ability to apply for other positions around the U.S.
Above average job security if you do your job well. FedEx goes out of its way to not lay people off when times are bad.
Cons
The facility is in dire need of an extreme makeover. The employee parking lot is littered with garbage. Seagulls circle around looking for a meal. I feel like I'm making a trip to the county dumps.
Getting promoted can be a slow process. Employee turnover is higher at the bottom and lower as the rank increases. This results in having to wait until people transfer or retire to be promoted within.
This is a physically demanding job and not for everyone. Extra trucks or flights can require employees to work overtime which may or may not be desirable.
Recognition is average. It could be better, but most people that go above and beyond are eventually recognized for their hard work.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide a cleaner working environment.
Provide healthier food options. A small on-site cafe would be perfect!
Provide a safe environment employees can nap after they are off the clock. This would prevent
employees from having accidents.
Do a better job recognizing top performers.
Pros
Somewhat stable company, however many things can make volitile (fuel, competition, etc). Very reactive whenever outside factors effect company.
Cons
Many poor senior and upper management, do as I say not as I do attitude. Reviews are intended to give lowest possible score so as to save the company money. If you get a bad senior environment is horrible and makes you hate the job even more.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn how to treat your managers. They go through enough with front line employees without having to get it from above all the time as well. Make it worthwhile to be a manger.
Pros
Advancement is good. Working conditions are good.
Cons
Benefits (Out of pocket expense).
Pay: It takes 20+ years to top out.
Advice to Senior Management
Thing need to change or in my area 70% of the workers hoping that the FAA Reauthorization Bill pass and you know what that means. Just telling you.
Pros
There are some fantastic co-workers, and some really intelligent people there. Generally, you are given the tools to complete your work and solve problems. The culture there is pretty inclusive and there isn't too much petty bickering other than what one would expect from a company of that size.
Cons
Surprise, but management can be shortsighted and sometimes ineffective. This seems to increase with seniority, with few exceptions. Also, while most co-workers were awesome, the absolute worst are the pilots if you're lucky enough to have to deal with them. I've never met a more self-serving, arrogant, obnoxious group. Very surprised at that.
Advice to Senior Management
You are normally good at seeing opportunities and making investments in the future. Don't forget that this is impossible without including your employees in this venture.
Pros
This is a stable company by virtue of services offered to its customers. Good benefits. If you want to advance, read job descriptions and work on qualifications.
Cons
Stacked sideways with burned out employees who are difficult to work with and unpredictable with customers. Management is focused on operational and legal issues, not employee performance or customer service.
Advice to Senior Management
Really look at AND UNDERSTAND AT A BASIC LEVEL what your employees are doing all day, especially as it relates to customer service, and hold them accountable--be brave and get out the pen!
Pros
People First. Very fair to employees. Decent benefits.
Cons
Hard to promote. Salary a little on the low side.
Pros
Retirement pays good great human resorses ablity to be flexable good communication with management and employees good enviroment and good equipment
Cons
no health care after retirement hours change off and on vacation only go to 5 weeks after 20 years of employment
Advice to Senior Management
management ,safety great leadership good medical benifts training all fields great on safety a good chance to advance and make more money
Pros
Great Stable Company, Awesome benefits, Competetive rate of pay
Cons
Too much of a workload on management, too much stress, not enough work life balance
Advice to Senior Management
Management team is over burdened. It used to be a gold ticket for an hourly employee to move to management now those employees pity the middle management folks as they see the stress of the position with little to no reward.
Pros
Excellent benefits package. More flexible scheduling than many other employers. More opportunities for those with only a high school education. Effective grievance system.
Cons
More focus on the shareholders than the employees (without whose efforts the shareholders wouldn't be getting a return). Lots of stress and workload burden on middle and senior management. Hourly employees get the most attention because FedEx will do whatever it takes to keep the hourly employees from going union. FedEx management all took a significant pay cut and raise freeze, which is understandable in this economy. But unlike other companies who have a plan to make it back up to their employees once the economy turns around, FedEx management will lose that money forever....even once FedEx is making bigger profits (to the benefit of the shareholders).
Advice to Senior Management
Despite the competition and the economy, FedEx needs to keep in mind that management still needs to be part of the People-First philosophy. It's hard to attract and retain good managers because it's pretty much known as a stressful, thankless, overworked position. Twenty years ago, hourly employees were chomping at the bit to become managers. Now most wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. The morale is lower than I've ever seen it in 25 years.
Pros
The health insurance is great.
Cons
We're paid less than competition.
