    Pros

The company has a great philosophy and wonderful work environment. It was a treat working with like-minded people.

    Cons

I only regret not being able to work there longer. During my short time I had a great experience, but would have enjoyed a chance to get more involved in the organization.

  2. An organization with a great mission with dedicated food bank members, but no technology direction or diversity.

    Pros

The benefits are very good, the downtown location (35 E Wacker) is an upscale building with nice furniture and offices. The pay is competitive, and donors give thousands for new PCs, temporary systems, the latest smart phones, and software. If you work in Technology, you get to travel, take great courses, tinker with the latest software, work from home, but work hard for the mission (nights, weekends and holidays).

    Cons

There is very little support from the eight executives around technology and there is no diversity in Technology. Of almost 30 technology employees, there are no African American's, only one or two hourly Hispanics, and if they do hire an ethnic minority, they are only accepted for so long (on average, less than two years). Technology management or the highly paid are 100% white in Technnology.

    Advice to Management

Technology should receive direction (three year plans) from the executive team; there should be diversity and acceptance of minorities (and respect while they are employees) within technology. The 200 employees of Feeding America deserve to be treated equally and not only treated better if you're of a certain click.

    Pros

Able to to support and implement the latest and greatest technology, there was always something going on to keep you busy, you were able to be a part of the companies mission.

    Cons

Too many management roles and everyone felt entitled. In our department it was hard to be a part of the group because a lot of people had worked together previously.

    Pros

The culture of this company is so great! It was a constant learning tree. I would definitely would like to be an employee again!

    Cons

I believe the leadership was a little over their budget and planning at the time I was laid off.

    Pros

The atmosphere in this organization is more professional than other non-profits where I have worked. The atmosphere is friendly, but focused on work. Feeding America has also expanded its work from a focus on food banks as a response to food security to a more comprehensive set of policies and programs responding to hunger.

    Cons

The staff here is over-represented by white females, which is also representative of the field. They could expand the diversity of their staff in both demographics and professional background.

    Pros

Professional dedicated staff all working to eliminate their jobs one day. Great technology innovator to assist their member foodbanks with tracking, processing, shipping, and reporting on food distribution.

    Cons

Solely relies on donations and government subsidies to operate. Hot projects today can lose donors interests and then get scrapped.

    Pros

    Amazing place to work!

    Cons

Work/Life balance was difficult, however senior management was aware of this and addressed it openly and provided resources and advice on how to manage.

    Pros

Work with passionate people and food bankers all around the country. Good PTO options.

    Cons

Not much room for growth and a very top heavy organization even though lower level staff do have a lot of responsibilities. Can make work/life balance hard.

    Advice to Management

Continue recent focus on change culture of the organization so senior staff communicate across departments and with junior staff.

  11. Excellent Community Program
