    Pros

Great people, long history, excellent benefits, charity contribution, good atmosphere, strong work ethics and good pay.

    Cons

Conservative company that doesn't always like new ideas and can move slowly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When people bring new ideas or positions to the table, don't be dismissive and listen instead of just writing people off.

    Pros

Nice office environment, underground parking, rich benefit program, seasoned employees.

    Cons

Too many chiefs, change is very difficult, no desire by most staff to improve processes, no compensation incentive to do anything better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline and standardize processes. Sincere appreciation for the employees. Be nice.

    Pros

Okay benefits. Job security because working for a larger firm. Nice facilities.

    Cons

Very low wages compared to other law firms. Overworked employees. Huge division between lawyers and support staff and lawyers there will have no problem telling you this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no management of attorneys or paralegals if there is an issue. They are exempt from feedback from lower level positions.

    Pros

Nice flexibility with work and live balance

    Cons

Not a competitive salary, There are polices but they only apply to those at the bottom. Secretaries and Attorneys are very mean and think they are the only people alive. You will have to kiss A$$ all day every day no matter what roll you are in. (it gets old fast). There are many in senior positions that claim to care about the employees but are simply all talk. There is a select few attorneys at the top level that bring in a boat load of money each year but are the nastiest most horrible people I have ever met. Two that come to mind begin with FEDER….(stay away from them if you join)
Just be prepared to be bullied by everyone and cover you’re a$$ every day. With this company you are only one mistake away from being walked out the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management will do what they want with minor input from others. They do not have vision so there is no opportunity to provide constructive criticism. It would be a waste of time as it will fall on deaf ears.

Current Employee - Legal Sec in Phoenix, AZ

    Pros

None I can think of that compare to other companies. Oh they have ice cream and a cheer cart full of candy they roll by from time to time. It is a nice thought!

    Cons

The salaries for staff are very weak but that's not the main reason for being dissatisfied. You are pushed and pushed at an unreasonable pace. The worst part are the attitudes of the attorneys we all support, which sometimes rubs off on the paralegals and secretaries. They are spoiled, and most NOT all think they are the most important person in the world. The attorneys that are “nice” mostly smile and tell you what you want to hear but don’t follow through on any thing they say. There are very few who are truly good people. The other issue is a lack of technical standards these people can install or bring in any piece of technology they want and we all have to learn to use it which makes keeping up with technology very difficult and seems to always break something else. We have problems with our computers all the time, I think because our IT group is told to accommodate everyone’s technology wants. No one is ever told NO, who is an attorney or paralegal and if they are they go to some one with more “Pull” to get what they want. It’s ridiculous. The training is very weak and they need a new trainer, he talks down to you anytime you ask a question or looks at you as if you are stupid. It is very degrading to an educated legal secretary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set some business and technology standards. If someone is unprofessional HR needs to have the guts to throw that attorney or paralegal out on their rear end. I have been stuck here but the economy is turning around and a bunch of staff is dusting off their resume.

Extremely political firm with very misleading management updates, low morale and no job security!

Former Employee - Legal Assistant  in  Phoenix, AZ
Former Employee - Legal Assistant in Phoenix, AZ

    Pros

The firm itself has an excellent reputation. Their pay and benefits are fair and competetive. They offer as much training in computer programs as employees are willing to take advantage of.

    Cons

The firm's reputation is rapidly declining among legal support staff within the legal community. The firm's management holds "state of the firm" meetings for the support staff and outright mislead the staff. Massive layoffs are constant even though the "state of the firm" tell us it is profitable and layoffs are not expected. There is absolutely NO job security, resulting in very low morale. VERY low morale. There is an underlying knowledge amongst the staff that the HR/Management Committe cannot be trusted, so no one is willing to confront or discuss concerns for fear of repercussions. When layoffs ARE made, it is amazing that they lay off (fire) the most talented and keep the ones that you wonder how they ever secured a job there in the first place. Maybe it is because the less talented are willing to work for less. I know many secretaries who have been offered file clerk positions at a huge paycut as an option to being let go, but because the market has been down, they are almost forced to take the cut. The secretaries there now have to cover at least four attorneys per person. At that rate, no one can excel or become invaluable or secure their position by working well with their attorney, since attorney-secretary assigment changes are made so often.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop misleading the staff into a false sense of job security - no one believes you anymore. You can receive an "excellent" job review one day and literally be called down and dismissed from the firm the next day. An attorney is only as sharp as his assistant makes him or her look. Do what you can to INCREASE your talent base in your assistants - it will pay off financially in spades. I would think that as brilliant as these attorneys are, this would be a given. Start treating your staff with the respect they deserve and have clearly earned.

Competitive salary and benefits, overall low morale amongst staff due to continual layoffs and no job security.

Former Employee - Legal Assistant in Phoenix, AZ

    Pros

Great attorneys and staff, ability to learn new technology thanks to great teaching and IT dept.

    Cons

There are continual layoffs of the staff. The upper management doesn't seem to be very selective in who they FIRE or lay off - some of the most talented and brilliant employees were let go continually, while less qualified candidates were allowed to stay longer - possibly due to making less wages. The overall morale is completely suffering due to the way the staff is treated. Nobody feels like they have job security!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You would do yourselves a favor to hang on to the more talented and bright of the legal staff, regardless of their pay scale - you get what you pay for. Letting people go on a continual basis AFTER you have reassured them that nobody will be losing their jobs, without warning creates an overall feeling of stress and anxiety which affects the work product of the employees. There is a huge lack of trust between management and staff. Why they don't recognize this is beyond me as they are a respected (although they have developed a reputation that it's not a good place to work) law firm who have been in Arizona longer than any other firm. Clearly, things must have been done differently by its founders.

Current Employee - Paralegal in Phoenix, AZ

    Pros

The best reasons to work for Fennemore Craig is the fact that it offers a decent benefits package and job retention is fairly high. There are many different areas of practice in this firm and even if you are experienced in only one area, there is opportunity to learn other types of law.

    Cons

This firm isn't as family friendly as I thought it would be. I think they should work on a better maternity leave package. If you work as a paralegal, you can bonus but you have to meet a minimum billable hour schedule which is difficult to attain when comepeting with young associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When there is somebody working in the firm that is extremely negative and brings morale at an all time low, they should be fired.

    Pros

Lots of work, lots of paper, job security, people clear out by 4:00 or 4:30, I've never seen anything like it before as far as people bolting out the door (even attorneys).

    Cons

Low pay, people are stressed out, definite pecking order, ordered and told what to do and not room for suggestions or creativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase pay scale to market rates.
