Great Company - Better have thick skin

    Account Manager (Current Employee)

ProsGreat pay, great commision structure, DOS's truly care about their sales team professionally and personally, good benys...all the tools and support you need to succeed

ConsVery frustrating division between sales and operations. Total lack of respect shown to sales team by the whole operations team. I've heard very disturbing comments by GM's and Op's managers about other Reps outside my territory.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrack Ops perfomance regarding new account setups and suport of sales efforts. They watch sales numbers closely enough but dont always know the whole picture.

Ferrellgas Sales vs Operations impacts bottom line

    Account Manager (Current Employee)
    Colorado Springs, CO

ProsFerrellgas provides a strong team environment, quality training and a good propane solution for commerical and residential accounts. The base pay and varied commission payout are pretty strong. The benefits are great and the sales team is strong. Serivce team is strong.

ConsThere is a huge gap between sales and operations, which will impact an account manager's income due to lack of installation support, poor internal communication, lack of response time from operations management and complicated reporting requirements in order to get some commissions paid out. Management over operations is lacking in leadership and execution. Competitive pricing is a concern, as account managers are fighting with lower margins and customers or prospects are typically getting charged a higher-than-average cost for product. Pricing teams and operations managers often change prices even after signed agreements are received.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop a better way to track poor performing operations mgt team members, as this greatly impacts getting sold accounts installed and account managers getting paid correctly and on time. Customers need to be treated better with regard to consistent and fair pricing - stop changing their price just to make your profit margins.

Good Place to Work, But Not For Everyone.

    Delivery Manager (Current Employee)
    Olympia, WA

ProsSeasonal business allows for ease of taking time off during the summer months. Employer is helpful in providing equipment to make work somewhat easier, if a little more binding (laptop/cell phone). Good benefits and employee stock ownership plan are a plus.

ConsWinter heating season is very hectic, which can cause frustrations and often the weather dictates how busy it is. Snow/Ice and cold conditions make for the most work, and also hampers deliveries, which is frustrating. Customers can be anxious and sometimes rude during these periods of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor the most part, I think senior management is doing a good job. Communication is not horrible, but could be better in relaying things that are going on in the company. Some mid-level managers aren't very people friendly and those areas could probably do better if those in charge were replaced.

    District Manager

    District Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGreat Safety Program / Good Pay / Quality Equipment / Ability to make a fair amount of significant decisions for your own operation.

ConsPricing killed competitiveness in my area. Customer's failure to plan often becomes an "emergency" for the driver or district manager on call.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive customers a real value that they can see to justify the often higher prices.

A better-than-average driving job with many ups and downs

    Bulk Driver (Current Employee)
    Melrose Park, IL

ProsDeliveries have a large window, so there isn't the pressure to arrive at a customer's location at a specific time. You can deliver at your own pace, as long as it's reasonably productive. It isn't back breaking labor, but enough to keep you in shape.

ConsThere's a higher than average turnover rate, which can make your work schedule unexpectedly long. Regardless, the winter seasons have always demanded long hours: if you like to work 40 hours a week or predictable, consistent hours, this job can be extremely frustrating for you. Vehicle breakdowns add to your hours, as they keep trucks long after they have become unreliable. They promised tuition reimbursement, but, even though I have filled out all of the paperwork every semester, they've never made good on this promise. They want you to deliver stops in the order determined by their new automated computer system, but the stop order doesn't always make sense, as the routing doesn't take into account truck route restrictions, railroads, etc. and the fact the routing will bring you to stops at times that may be bad for the customer (before or after hours, a time where the yard is too busy, etc). Driver suggestions are ignored.

Advice to Senior ManagementDrivers shouldn't be forced to work excessive overtime for month after month. Drivers that leave for work before their children wake up should be able to get home before they go to sleep. Driver input for routing should be given due respect and not ignored.

It was a good job while in college and paid better over minimum wage!

    Materials Handler (Former Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsStaring pay was $10.00 p/h while minimum wage was around $8.00. Part time employees still get all bennefits including paid time off. Fairly easy work with little supervision. Family style work place.

ConsSmelly, lots of repetitive work that can get boring. Lots of lifting and work in the elements, alot of time alone and no real praise for puttign in the extra effort it is just expected. Spent alot of time on superficial projects that didn't make much difference.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees more feedback on work performance and spend more time making the work place better then making it look better.
