Enjoyed my job, but corporate vision is absolutely horrible!

I worked at Ferro full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed my job immensely. There was always something to do and there were a lot of very tenured employees who were willing to go the extra mile to get goals accomplished. The people on the floor are what I enjoyed the most. I also enjoyed the overtime pay even as a salaried manager which is almost unheard of.

    Cons

Some of the challenges of working here involved corporate management trying to just cut their way to profitability and continuously shrinking the scope of the business instead of trying to grow the business when the opportunities are there. All of the managers take shots at each other and are more than willing to make someone else look bad on the public forum to make themselves look good. The daily production meeting was referred to as the "Snake Pit" for a reason. You better have all your ducks in a row.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate management is so far removed from the site level that they have absolutely no clue what they are even making decisions about. Grow the business, not shrink it. The opportunities are there, but corporate management is too busy pinching pennies while throwing out dollars.

    I worked at Ferro

    Pros

Used to be a stable company with a lot of good people working there. Wages were average. Management seemed to care. They have downsized tremendously and have sold off a lot of the businesses. Hopefully they will be able to rebuild from this point onwards.

    Cons

From what I understand, everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Do they have enough employees left to rebuild?

I have been working at Ferro full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The only positive I can find is the people... Some managers are okay but for the most part lack of upper management discipline middle managers can be your worst nightmare...

    Cons

Value creations strategy SUCKS... Raises and promotions come from the same budget so when raise time comes and your raise is below average for good work done, someone else in your group got that promotion you just paid for with your cut in raise... This company over the past few years NEVER promotes from within... NO OPPORTUNITY !!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your people because for the most part, they want to serve the customer...

Boring, typical, and average with a twist of incompetence

I worked at Ferro full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Everything about this specialty chemical company is pretty average and boring, to include: pay and benefits, company culture, offices, and upper management. Overall good people with good intentions, but not exactly the place to get your creative juices flowing to truly innovate.

    Cons

Significant difficulty with change management. Pay and benefits at the bottom end of average. Weak HR support. Financial instability due to leadership playing games with the stock price.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change is necessary, but pick your poison carefully. Expecting employees to juggle 1-3 change initiatives plus their usual job is ok, but expecting them to juggle 4-10 different initiatives plus their usual responsibilities is a recipe for disaster, which is exactly how those on the outside view Ferro: disastrous in terms of career AND shareholder value.

    Pros

    Good Benefits
    Looks good on a Resume
Shutdown Week during Christmas/New Years time
Production Staff is really personable and easy to work with
A looooootttttt of OT if you want to work it

    Cons

    Low Pay
You will not move up no matter how hard you work
Will be talked down to constantly
    Raises very minimal

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees who have good ideas instead of using phrases like "I know that" or "Yes, I knew that" all the time when they truly do not know.

I have been working at Ferro full-time

    Pros

Starting pay for entry level employees is very good.
    Typically, overtime is available.
Company benefits extend to hourly employees, not just salaried employees.

    Cons

Don't expect raises or decent bonuses.
Management is rude and demeans employees. Things like "Are you an idiot?" and "What's wrong with you?" are thrown around.
Company cuts corners on machine and building maintenance. Buys the cheapest parts even though they don't work.
Have seen state and federal regulations violated to save money.
