    Pros

    Flexible work options
    Opportunities for advancement
    Great benefits and development resources

    Cons

Unfortunately, advancement is more about how well you manage up vs, how well you do your job.
    Conform, conform, conform.
    Don't rock the boat.
Being a contrarian is a disadvantage

    Advice to Management

Hold all management responsible to ensuring that advancement is tied to attainment of goals.

    Pros

You learn a ton about the clearing and custody business. You are one arm of the full implementation spectrum, but it allows you client facing opportunities as well as exposure to all levels of management and different departments. The experience, knowledge and exposure are the biggest advantages to this job

    Cons

Travelling can be extensive. Each implementation is at least 1 - 2 weeks (including the weekends) and it's not uncommon to go from one to another. Some implementations are scheduled and promised by upper management to the client, for 10 - 12 weeks. There were many instances where employees would travel from a 2 week conversion to a 4 week conversion to another 4-6 week conversion back to back.

I don't know if the pay grades were appropriate for this sort of commitment to the employees.

    Advice to Management

    1) Higher pay
    2) Be a lot more flexible with the work at home schedule when employees are back in office. Rather than having to sign up for an approved day at home, allowing employees to choose when they work from home would improve morale.
    3) Take managers off of projects so they can actually be managers. Having an unreachable manager for weeks on end isn't conducive to a healthy work environment.

    Pros

    - Privately held; long term focus for the business
    - Good comp structure although changing
    - Solid technology

    Cons

    - Firm has become incredibly bureaucratic
    - Undergoing talent drain
    - Innovation has slowed; has difficulty shifting business in current economic environment

    Advice to Management

Get focused on priorities; too many of them and focused on internal organization.

    Pros

Great benefits, competitive salary, lots of diversions in the way of talks by high profile outside speakers, art tours in the building, classes at the gym, etc.. etc. Very nice and intelligent people work at this company and the majority are very committed to the firm. In that way, it is truly refreshing.

    Cons

Projects move at a snail's pace. A lot of politics three and four ticks down from the CEO. If you like fast paced and challenging, this is not the place for you. If you want to be more than just a small cog in a huge machine, this is not the place for you. If you mind the ever-present feeling that Big Brother is watching everything you do (in and out of work), this is not the place for you.

    Pros

In my role, the work / life balance seems to be good. Nobody bothers you. Very flexible. Corporate seems to be doing a great job.

    Cons

Training seems to be inconsistant. Nobody seems to be on the same page. The people are not friendly and can be jerks at times, arrogant and cold.

    Advice to Management

I think the weakest link is the unfriendliness of my coworkers. I am shocked at the coldness of the people I have to spend most of my time with. It is a big dissapointment to me and it shouldn't be like this. I think a great way to improve this would be to implement some team building exercises. You don't have to spend too much time on this. Just something to better connect you with your coworkers. It is hard to dive for a ball in the stands for teamates that don't respect you.

    Pros

state of the art technology, usually good people to work with

    Cons

Very political, quite a few prima donnas who are protected by higher managers, some who don't do much all day, worked there for years.

    Advice to Management

Stop the political machine, focus on good attitudes and good people, then invest in them and their careers. You have lost out on a lot of good people due to these issues. My feeling is prevalent among the workforce. The company has gone downhill, especially since Abby Johnson protected the profit margin over having loyalty to long-time employees around 2008 on....

    Pros

Solid pay, decent work-life balance, excellent benefits. The people at Fidelity are smart, friendly and uniformly desire to do the right thing.

    Cons

Terrible disconnect between senior management and the people below them. Poltiical maneuvering among senior leaders is widespread, a result of C-level unwillingness to set direction clearly or resolve conflicts decisively.

Company culture is consensus-driven - often from the bottom up in that individuals, groups and teams are left to work things out themselves - and when issues among teams arise that cannot be resolved below the SVP level, they remain unaddressed and left to fester until things get bad enough that someone senior HAS to step in, usually with more fallout than would have been necessary if the problem had been addressed earlier.

There is a serious blind spot when it comes to recognizing the limits of consensus-building and the fact that leadership by directive is sometimes necessary.

    Advice to Management

Fidelity does very well in the financial services marketplace, but it would absolutely own that space if it could stop stepping on its own feet. The problem is not how you're communicating to everyone in the organization, it's that you are not leading effectively, and this problem starts with the president of the company. Be visible, be decisive, and set direction - if everything is going to be run by consensus, we don't need you.
