Good enough for 2-3 year stint

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsProfessional and friendly working environment. Very client focussed. Good technical training especially for graduates.

ConsCareer progression is limited so if you are looking to move up after 2 years the opportunities are minimal. Salaries are below market averages and recognition of top performers is generally quite poor - always seems to go blame 'poor economic climate' which gets tiresome especially when the company is doing fine on paper.

Loved it, but had to move on.

Analyst (Former Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsPeople - the most intelligent, helpful and dedicated staff across all departments.
Work-life balance is respected, if that's what you want / need.
Constant influx of new ideas with the grad developers means progress does not stagnate. The low pay actually benefits the company here - the experienced guys leave and new blood comes in. Keeps it all fresh.
Benefits are in line with City firms.

    ConsPay isn't great.
    Woking is pretty grim.
Sales sell vapourware which puts unnecessary pressure on technical teams.

Advice to Senior ManagementGenerally keep going as you are. you have am industry wide reputation for doing things properly.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Start your career here, leave after 2 or 3 years

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Woking, England (UK)

Pros1) Fidessa is a good company to start your career. You get a good exposure to the financial sector and knowledge that will help you find a better job later on.

    2) Benefits are quite good except from salary and pension scheme.

    3) Fidessa pays overtime but only because they can charge their clients for it.

Cons1) Fidessa operates a pool of low paid employees, where everybody is expendable. This is why they never make any counter offers when somebody leaves, except in very very few cases.

    2) Excellence in work is never rewarded. No matter how well you do your job, you are going to get the same "pre-fixed" salary increase. This is very demotivating once you find out.

    3) It is not worth staying in the company after 2-3 years as you soon find out that your market value is at least 30-50% more than Fidessa offers.

    4) Senior management show no consideration for their employees and they all seem to have a hands-off approach when it comes to implementation. It is amazing that although Fidessa is a software company, its senior managers either do not have a technical background or have not touched code for decades.

    5) The pension scheme Fidessa has is very poor. You have to pay in 3% for the company to contribute a maximum of 3%. This is in contrast to banks that pay in 10-15% and you do not have to pay any contribution at all.

    6) The company boasts about the job security it offers. This means that you will be paid significantly below your market rate, but you will never be fired by Fidessa. This model benefits low quality employees that hang on to Fidessa knowing that they will never be fired. It does not benefit bright individuals who want to get rewared for their good quality work. This is why the latter normally leave after 2-3 years.

    7) The CEO has made some very big mistakes in choosing the business model for the company, in buying LatentZero and in deciding the direction that the company will take. Fidessa was too late to implement a dividends platform and has not implemented any Fixed Income or FX platforms as far as I know.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward excellence and get rid of people that are not contributing to revenue growth. Try to motivate people more and keep talented people instead of letting them go.

Good for settling down, not so good for workaholics or promotion-seekers

Software Developer (Former Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsGood low-level management, good work-life balance, fast-paced customer-driven software development teams.

ConsOpen-plan offices (albeit the norm, sadly), few opportunities for vertical promotion (again, sort of inevitable for a medium-sized company), minimal contact with others outside team, company doesn't cope well with workaholics.

Also, the work is hindered by some poor technology choices (just my opinion).

Advice to Senior ManagementPerhaps try something like moving people between teams to help their skills develop. This is especially a good idea if someone is evidently a workaholic. Also try involving new employees in the code review process if they need slowing down. :-)

On the technical side, I think changing scripting language and version control system to something a bit nicer would help make the developers' lives a bit easier and probably improve productivity as well.

No career, no drive and revolving door policy.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsIt is a secure job, people don't get made redundant and you have a lot more freedom than in other companies.

ConsThe salaries are terrible, people leave in droves every few years or so and the board doesn't seem to be too concerned, it is almost as if there is a revolving door policy, every few years push salaries down, let people leave and replace with graduates. It is a good place to start your career but don't look much beyond three years before moving somewhere else. If you want to move on, get married, settle down, buy a house then this is not the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop using the economic down turn as an excuse to push salaries down, employee happiness is just as important as profit.

Great people but dead end job, most leave after one year

Support (Former Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsThe people are amazing in support

    ConsThankless job
Treated with contempt by devs and project managers
    Low morale
No chance of third party training, or any further training beyond your first month
No chance of career development other than other support roles
    Pay is basic
High turnaround as people get offers over 30,000 for the same job
Managers will block any internal move you try and make, so you have to leave

Friendly people can't prevent a structure that uses work-life balance and divides departments to hold people down

Delivery Engineer (Current Employee) Woking, England (UK)

ProsA generally good work-life balance and some absolutely wonderful people .
Lots of opportunities to move within the company, however these are usually sideways moves and will very rarely result in a pay rise.
    Paid overtime and shifts.
The decisions on the direction of the company always (with the exception of the 2009 hiring freeze) come across as sensible and positive.

ConsMuch lip-service is given about being a caring employer, but the reality is its just because they're too cheap to pay the market rates.

Pay rises highly restricted and the vast majority of people are brought in as graduates, so its unusual to see salaries above £30,000 for positions where the industry standard can often be double this.

This, along with the poor opportunities for progression (all the much touted opportunities are largely for sideways moves between departments ) means there is a high employee turnover - management have typically worked at the company for a long time (most 10 years or so), which balances out the statistics so there appears to be no concern over this.

The structure of the company can at times encourage us-and-them reactions between departments, which is unhelpful and can result in some ludicrous decisions being taken.

Middle-management find plenty of space for empire-building, which is often very detrimental and there's typically very little thought paid to how to how well people's time is being used.

Little attention is paid to retention of anyone who has not been at the company for many years - this results in people who have a desire to progress finding themselves doing a high proportion of work for little reward while it is easy for those with many years experience to coast.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the day-to-day stuff, not just the big marketing fluff. Stop wasting good people by not offering realistic pay/ good benefits. Woking might not be as sexy as London, but its what keeps everything going.
