I have been working at Finished Basement Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Nice showroom, great new location

    Cons

The turn-over rate is ridiculous. They tend to churn and burn. Want to work here? Ask how many total employees they have currently and how many have left (fired or quit) the last 3 years. Then you decide if a short term, stressful thing is your gig.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hey, it's your company, your legacy, and your dough, so i guess you can do what you want. I work here because I need the job, but it's only a matter of time before I'm fired (or I just don't show up anymore). I had great hopes and great excitement for FBC, but the reality of what this place is hit me. My advice? either live the Credo, or change it to read "do what it takes and put profit before people"- at least you'd be honest with yourself and others.

I have been working at Finished Basement Company full-time

    Pros

The team is amazing! Can't ask for a better group to work with. The designs are amazing and we are always pushed to the next level. We also have a great owner who cares about his team and our success. The pace is fast and intense but the rewards are high !

    Cons

We work a lot but that is better than having nothing to do. There are also expectations for you to take on more work for the same compensation which is great for the resume

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find each persons strength and coach to it

I worked at Finished Basement Company full-time for more than a year

    Pros

very talented design staff, nice showroom with well-stocked snacks

    Cons

The branches are run like a low-end sun room or aluminum siding sales shop - think of Glen-Gary Glenn-Ross. Designers are pushed hard to produce designs in a very short time, design consultants are 100% commissioned so really should be called sales people and are pushed hard on closing the sale (not necessarily a 'con' but this business is about closing sales not about outstanding customer service or employee satisfaction or culture). The hype around the great culture is an empty initiative and preached but not followed. High employee turn-over rate, low employee satisfaction rate. No opportunity for employee development or growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be upfront with employees that the business is just about selling basements - lots and lots and lots of basements. The culture, employee well-being, job satisfaction and quality of the end product are not priorities.

A high-turnover company not interested in maintaining a long-term workforce

I worked at Finished Basement Company

    Pros

    - Short project lead time, pretty satisfying to see the project complete in 3 months
    - Non-management staff are great people to work with
    - FBC conducts client reviews that make it possible to get feedback from clients after a project is completed
    - Kitchen well-stocked with snacks

    Cons

    - Very poor leadership and management, lots of finger pointing and blaming of staff when sales are down
    - Too much emphasis on supposed "company culture" and resulting propaganda/slogans, and too little emphasis on actual effective leadership
    - High turnover in staff due to burnout and frustration
    - Staff with no sales background or experience are held to sales numbers
    - Employer expects that you will be available to attend meetings 12+ hours per day
    - No value placed on quality of design, given a few hours to do a week's worth of design work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more upfront with prospective employees when they interview for design positions. Don't pretend like there will be any emphasis on design. Be clear that it is a high-volume process, without much time to spend on design, and there is a heavy emphasis on sales.
