I worked at Fireman's Fund Insurance as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere to work in. All my colleagues were pleasant to work with and easy to get along with. I had plenty of freedom to run errands in my life while still being of use to the company. I enjoyed the community at the company quite a lot, as I played ultimate frisbee with some company friends every Tuesday and Thursday. I believe the company has been acquired recently by Allianz so I'm not sure if the office is the same, but I'd love to work there again if given the chance.

    Cons

My job of reviewing the software contracts was pretty boring, but that's no fault of the company's. I could only work for 15 minutes at a time before I needed a break. Didn't learn as much as I wanted. However, it's what I expected going into the job so I can't complain too much.

    Advice to Management

If possible, try and keep the same office building. That place was gorgeous. Last time I was there, the second floor on my wing of the building wasn't being used, so I suggest renting out to another company to help bring in revenue to pay for company expenses.

  2. Helpful (1)

    FFIC was great, AGCS isn't.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

FFIC was a great place to work. Good people and leaders who cared about the organization.

    Cons

The transition to Allianz has been extremely poorly managed. They are letting a lot of top notch talent go and taking a short term look at moving forward.

    Advice to Management

AGCS needs to change thinking it knows everything - especially about US P&C market. You will get a rude awakening.

    Pros

I worked for FFIC for almost 20 years. The 'reconfiguration' resulted in me being laid off. Best part is always the people. Most were dedicated, hard working employees who would go the extra mile to get the job done.

    Cons

Culture of change was not evident in most areas of the company with the notable exception of the areas trying to drive innovation and business transformation. Too many people who didn't challenge why they did what they did.

    Advice to Management

Make decisions. Manage by fact. AGCS should assimilate the best parts of the culture. However I don't believe that AGCS is interested in changing its culture.

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits, and flexible work options (telecommuting, flex-time) depending on manager of your team.

    Cons

Company is not doing well financially and the environment is chaotic as a result. Uncertainty over future employment, opportunities for advancement, etc.

    Advice to Management

More transparency about future planning, give employees truthful and realistic options, and give us incentive to stay during the chaos.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits: generous 401k match (they match 100% up to 7.5%), generous PTO, and generally very good work-life balance. The work-day is only 7.5 hours for some inexplicable reason that I never complained about.

    Cons

Rarely profitable in recent years. The company's footprint got too large, literally in Novato with its sprawling campus that was unnecessarily large. Very dated and archaic computer/data systems. A lot of IT red-tape, outsourced IT to IBM is frustrating at times.

    Advice to Management

Good move to consolidate Fireman's Fund into AGCS. Don't be afraid to make the difficult decisions.
