I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Dept supports work-life balance and supports process improvement as well as best-practice sharing.
Beautiful campus with variety of fitness opportunities, including on-site chair massage (at low-cost).
Much technology improvement opportunity or years for those who work on projects to change the company.

    Cons

Most in-progress projects have been shelved or scaled-down and are pending sorting out what our parent company wants to do with the commercial and personal lines.
    Lack of leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please communicate frequently to advise why not leave now rather than see whether I am kept or offered severance.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Beautiful Novato campus and great people to work with. Unique insurance products offering and an incredibly talented Claims organization. A subsidiary of financially sounds global Insurance giant (Allianz)

    Cons

Conservative slow pace company with high frequency of senior management turnover. The ever changing strategy impacted the company's performance in the last 6 years. The current and past CEO have been able to maintain the same strategy and the results are improving.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Prospect of severance and unemployment checks; better economic conditions to find other employment.

    Cons

It's a moot issue now but you would have needed a strong stomach to survive the Allianz musical chairs with CEOs. New strategy? No problem? Sticking to it? Problem. Seeing it through? Not gonna happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just get it over with already. To string the employees out after having your parent company throw you under the bus is just mean, cruel and unnecessary. Yeah, we know, you're figuring out the new strategy. Again. Stop it. I take responsibility for staying as long as I did. Allianz needs to take responsibility for complete lack of oversight and interest.

    Pros

None, if you work here for any length of time you will loose any job skills you ever had.

    Cons

Worked in the Insurance Industry for over 20 years, have never before encountered such incompetence and mismanagement by a group of senior executives. The company is being slowly closed down and many good people are going to loose their jobs because of these clowns. They would not recognize a viable strategy if it was in plain view of them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too late they have already destroyed the company.

    Pros

Telecommuniting, Heritage Program, some truly good human beings in the trenches, good 401k match

    Cons

No upward mobility- constant middle and upper managment turnover with accompanying change of focus/direction. But hey all those folks who have worked here for 5 minutes know WAY more than the rest of the staff Health benefits poor post Affordable Care Act.

I worked at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I have to tell you, there are absolutely no positive aspects of working for this company. They are dishonest. They will slander you after you leave. I am an honest hardworking person who has been a very successful executive in this industry for more than 2 Decades. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY.

    Cons

They are dishonest. They slander their employees. They lie to the Department of Insurance. They lie to their clients. They lie to their employees. There is nothing redeeming about this organization whatsoever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get some scruples. get some integrity. Stop slandering ex-employees. Stop lying.

I worked at Fireman's Fund Insurance full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It was a paycheck. Some benefits were the food court served descent food and the grounds were nice and quite large for walks. You also had a 37.5 hour work week compared to 40 plus.

    Cons

Terrible upper management who only looked out for themselves. Little to no room for advancement. Corporate infrastructure was old and not up to date. Typical large corporate environment. Upper management doesn't know or care who you are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in upgrading corporate infrastructure. Focus on keeping productive and knowledgeable employees and rewarding them to minimize turnover.

    Pros

    20 vacation days a year.
Big cafeteria with food cooked to order.

    Cons

    A Public Service Announcement

Expected a development job within the IT department, but I found IT to be managing vendors and integration between the vendors. Integration was just XSLT transforms. Was there for close to a month and didn't type a single line of code except for the interview coding test. I don't get it. People in the team also came in with the same expectations.

    Don't say I didn't warn you.

    Technology used are really outdated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With each vendor adds a new layer of complexity to the entire system and requires integration and maintenance which probably outweighs the cost benefits of going with vendors.

Get a good tools team/department to deal with internal software tools...
