Current Employee - Contact Center Technical Specialist in Corpus Christi, TX

I have been working at First Data full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great co-workers. This has nothing to do with the company itself, but there are some excellent people working at the Corpus Christi site who are always willing to help. This site does what it can to accommodate who may be limited due to a disability, and are always helpful in making sure you can do your job with ease.

    Cons

The many changes that this company has gone through in the last 2 years have made this site, and company in general, a negative place. The benefits have been modified and are now horribly expensive, especially for reps that are not being paid well enough to compensate for the amount of money they will have to spend in order to see a doctor on a regular basis. Along with that, slashing personal days is not beneficial to reps who feel this place is a shell of its former self. There have been many firings just within the last 3-4 weeks, yet every one in the building is expected to be cross-trained for various products for the same pay, which increases stress and frustration, and reduces productivity greatly. This has dropped the already-low morale to greater depths.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please do not expect everyone to pull the load for all the horrible decision-making that has been going on with this company. First Data has lost millions upon millions of dollars these last few years, but firing reps, and expecting the ones left to handle the actual work, and having to work multiple products for the same pay, requiring mandatory overtime, and slashing benefits and time off, will only make matters much worse in the future.

    Pros

Amazing people with tremendous tenure and payments knowledge; massive distribution network; most employees are passionate about their customers and really want the company to succeed.

    Cons

Senior leadership typically does not trust the expertise and judgment of the staff. Actions don't appear to be consistent with stated corporate values.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lighten up a bit on the big bank management style and bureaucracy. Perhaps pass on the jets and cars. Trust that more payments knowledge exists in First Data staff than in any other company. They'll help you be successful.

    Pros

Quick turn-over, meaning, openings all the time
    Nice people, overall.

    Cons

No personal workspace (desk/cubical) so you may feel like just a number, unimportant, not many raises. Terrible place if you have allergies.
    Needed user-friendly training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would strongly recommend that supervisors not share facts like, not receiving a raise in over three years, creates a bleak outlook for employees and a down right bummer.

I worked at First Data full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are some of the best in the industry. Colleagues and middle managers tend to be very strong. It is at the upper echelons where leadership needs improvement. First Data is a powerhouse processor with the ability to capitalize on lots of trends in the payments industry.

    Cons

In spite of the talent, it is difficult for the company to bring ideas to market. Lack of resources and the previously mentioned lack of leadership/strategic direction from senior management have caused the company to fall behind from a technology and product perspective. Salaries were 'adjusted' to save money in advance of trying to IPO.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop building a top-heavy structure and insisting on a one size fits all approach to hiring (now they want all new hires to report to an office). When benefits and staff are being reduced, it seems counterintuitive to open new offices in New York and New Jersey so the gang of newly hired senior managers don't have to relocate.

    I worked at First Data

    Pros

The people are wonderful. They try and help you in all aspects ofthe job.

    Cons

Since KKR took over all it has been about is making it look good enough to take it public and then dump it for a profit. Layoffs every year. Now instead of RIFing you so they have to pay severance, they force managers to rate employees low and then terminate them for poor performance. Hired a bunch of interns and dumped senior people. No 401k match. They took that away to increase the bottom line. Do not work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. I don't know how they are going to turn this around by getting rid of all the employees with knowledge.

    Pros

None. There's no reason to work for this company.

    Cons

No 401k matching. Consistent reductions in workforce. No bonus targets. Only top 30% performers eligible for annual raise (grading is all subjective, great if you know someone). Recently reduced time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No loyalty or appreciation for employees. No work life balance.
