I worked at First Investors Corporation full-time

    Pros

Paid to study and pass the tests needed to be a legal rep. Very casual environment

    Cons

Reps were so comfortable that they were also very informal. They were like kids in suits and dresses while at a meeting, eating, playing with their toes and joking around. Pay was horrible as they expected you to work 10 hours a day!

    Advice to Management

More support and individual training to your new recruits

    Pros

The company is entrepreneurial in nature and allows for employees to spread out and do business in their own personal way.

    Cons

New hires are over worked, under-compensated, and demoralized by management. The whole company comes off with a very "used car salesman" type of vibe to it. Mostly lower to middle-class, blue-collar individuals will be the investors in the company's mutual funds. These are people who have little to no understanding of mutual funds and are taken in by this company's self promoted interest in integrity. What is worse is that management justifies their actions as if they were an 80's-esque stock broker firm, whose only goal is to make a profit at the expense of others.

    Advice to Management

Rework the structure and organization of the company from the top down. You're shooting your sales and long term potential in the foot by forcing the sales force to focus on short term client sales. The whole operation comes off as very sleazy and dishonorable. If I were a potential investor, I certainly wouldn't invest here.

    Pros

At the time I worked with good people who helped me out when I needed. My bosses were pretty easy going about leaving early

    Cons

The corporate bosses don't care about you unless you are bringing in money so that means being a Financial Advisor. You have to be licensed to work there even if you are only an assistant

    Advice to Management

Treat assistance and new financial advisors the same. Especially since the assistance usually know more than you think like paperwork.

    Pros

As your practice builds, you can choose your own schedule. No income limitation, and the reward can be extremely high for sticking it out. The stipend helps as you pass exams and get more comfortable on your feet.

    Cons

Starting up in this business is hard work. You get told no quite a bit, but you learn to live with it. Finding the people to sit down with is the hardest part. Long hours.

    Advice to Management

Consistently encourage starting reps about what they are doing well. Teach them how to sell, not procedures.
