    Pros

If you enjoy working with children, and take seriously the responsibility of making sure that they are safety transported to and from school, then this is a very rewarding part-time job.

    Cons

You have to be someone who enjoys getting up before sunrise in a variety of weather conditions; and it is a part-time job which makes it a little difficult to find an additional place of employment to make any additional income if needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Offer benefits to the employees.

    Pros

Charter trips, work availability (depends on location), work schedule. This job follows school schedule and makes decent supplemental income. They cover cost of licensing and certification.

    Cons

Pay (locations vary), gets mundane, policies that make no sense, upper management, failing fleet that flips FS safety policies on its head. No incentives/retainer also no advancement other than capping at senior pay. "Do as we say not as we do" vibe. CYA company!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shape up and pay attention and act upon the drivers who operate the junk you force upon us for the safety of the passengers, motoring public and the driver, who without, you couldn't complete your jobs.

I have been working at First Student part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Safety is a primary consideration. Regular inspections, evaluations, and training help to ensure safety is at the forefront. The schedule is perfect for my busy life.

    Cons

Management doesn't always treat employees with dignity and respect. Drivers are often made to feel guilty about adhering to DOT regulation regarding being safe to drive and pressured to drive anyways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that drivers, on the whole, are professional drivers and grown individuals able to gauge their ability to safely operate a school bus. Do not attempt to guilt or pressure them into driving anyways.

I have been working at First Student part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are great. Time off on holidays and summer. Pay is good compared to other jobs.

    Cons

Managers are not qualified to do their jobs. If they do hire someone good they will get burnout because of all the stupid rules and procedures they have to follow. You feel like you're being spied on. They pay you to the second, got a pay check for 39.98 hours!!
The bus are old and break down. They don't respect union contracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop miro-managing your terminals. Listen to the drivers because they are the companies biggest asset. No drivers, no company!!! Hire more qualified managers.

I have been working at First Student full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to hone your management skills. You can be the guiding light for a lot of people, and really develop some great employees. Some fun annual conferences.

    Cons

Sub-standard pay for this level of management, and the benefits are ridiculous. No stability as contracts are bid every three years. Complete intrusion into your day from employees that have nothing better to do. Sub-standard yearly raises. Extremely long hours. Communication from external customers that leaves you scratching your head, "did they just say that?" "What planet are they from?" Infrequent support from the schools on discipline.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Budgetary concerns are important, but working for a company that puts the $ before maintenance is not good business, and threatens your job security.
