    Stable Company with decent benefits

    I worked at First Transit

    Pros

Good people with strong work ethics. Very helpful and cooperative in getting the job done. There is on the job training but individuals need to be able to develop relationships and reach out to colleagues when help is needed. Time off policies are standard.

    Cons

Industry compensation lags sightly behind comparable job classes in other industries but you can make a decent living.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at First Transit full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

nothing positive about working here other than........ nothing. the buses are shoddy at best, mechanics are over worked and under paid, the drivers are underqualified and misinformed. Turn over is higher than the one at any fast food restaurant. the totality of the experience of working here is idiotic, I am leaving as soon as my now job calls!

    Cons

poor management, disgruntal former and current employees who are dying to leave and who are either short on options or have no other options or marketable stills

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

QUIT NOW AND SAVE THE EMBARRASMENT OF BEING FIRED!!

I have been working at First Transit

    Pros

    The overtime pay Is awesome.

    Cons

So many things are wrong with first transit. Their are Caddy young girls that have no professional skills. ONLY the women have to sign out a bathroom key to use the restroom, ALL THE MEN are gay!! This place have bugs people eat at the desk and dont clean up after themselves. You have to share cubicles, Becareful of the people you sit around.. they will get your extension number and have one of their friends call to get you in trouble. Be careful!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to promote or hire more professional and knowledgeable team leads. Stop all the talking and fraternizing the employees do at work station. This is suppose to be a place of business and productivity. Not chatting co worker's.

I have been working at First Transit for more than 8 years

    Pros

Company only cares about bottom line, not about employees; disregards their benefits, poor pay scales, little training.

    Cons

The company just wants computer geeks staring at screens all day or drivers who work for low pay at all hours and conditions. Offers little or no training beyond poor excuses for "webinars" run by insensitive people from Cincinnati or over-controlling and over-assuming regional finance "directors" who write emails in capital letters commanding managers. Benefits are terrible, drivers get better health care. Hours are off the scale even for salaried employees...this company gives you a cell phone and expects you to work 24/7 year around and respond no matter what. Terrible "human resources" department...makes assumptions and decides to terminate employees for little to no reason and without any warning or remedial action if a problem exists...union drives get better treatment, the worst of them are over protected and brought back to work no matter how troublesome they are. Company doesn't delve into "interpersonal" situation...just assumes the worst when some rogue employee says another is 'harrassing' or causing a problem...company just assumes the accuser is correct and fires whoever was blamed without any reasonable hearing. Senior managers are out of touch except for "bottom line" as they watch their bonuses and could care less about anything else. Company has a very capable US president but no one ever sees the guy, no 'town hall' meetings, no personal touch.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensate managers properly. Insist that salaried employees work limited hours. Increase and enhance health care benefits instead of taking away reasons to actually stay loyal to First Transit. Stop doing webinars all the time and instead engage people face to face. Hold annual regional meetings. Centralize most location functions so that managers can get away from computers and actually manage their operations. Stop firing general managers every chance you get and instead invest in and engage them so that HR folks, removed from reality, can better judge situations that occur instead of just pulling the trigger on experienced managers...what a great loss for the company every time that happens...most people can be relocated or retrained if a problem exists instead of executing them. Really poor internal culture that makes every manager feel continually threatened, insecure, and less willing to invest themselves in First Transit.

I have been working at First Transit full-time for less than a year

    Pros

If you like driving, you will do lots and in ALL weather conditions. Paratransit is booming so lots and lots and lots of hours, lots of OT if you want and a little even if you dont want it....good health insurance but it seems a bit expensive.

    Cons

This is considered 'public transportation' so they cant say 'no' to rides. Not uncommon to have a dozen or more unrouted rides in an hour, they will just have to put the ride somewhere on your already overbooked route... Have onboard computer/gps, so your route changes constantly, you really can only be sure about 2 stops ahead...sometimes. Very long rides for most customers, not unusual for a ride to be 70 minutes, sometimes 90+, just to go a few miles and alot of 20-30 minute late pick ups..so there is the stress of dealing with that, even tho it doesn't go against the driver. Hard for new drivers because you dont know if the route makes sense untill you look at the map, which you wont have time to do. Alot of turn over. Its a union shop, good and bad thing. Everything is done by senority, not alot of room for advancement. You usually have to ask dispatch to be sure you are back by your end time, ask to make sure you get a lunch..you will usually be going from stop to stop all day with no real breaks. Sorta funny, in the classroom training we were told to bring a book with because there would down time, havent seen that down time yet. Good health insurance, if you use it.. but with insurance and union dues, you will need to work OT just to afford working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a big disconnect between the training I recieved and what I see from the other drivers and what I hear from the customers. Gotta work on driver retention, and having enough drivers on the road everyday... the machine gun changes to the routing are obnoxious, there is alot of wasted time having drivers move back and forth across the city in empty buses in order to do a pick up.
