I worked at First Transit full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A great option for people wanting to work in Public Transit, especially if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

Changes over the last few years mean the concentration is on the profit margin. This meant changes in benefits and field manager resources. Silos exist, limitations on upward mobility, etc.

    Advice to Management

Provide more support for the managers in the field. Value the work they do.

I worked at First Transit full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with are the drivers who takes their job in safety seriously!!

    Cons

It takes a manager not highly trained in leadership and dealing with diverse group. If its not safe, don't do it!

    Advice to Management

If you don't pay well, and treat drivers right, you get what you pay for....

I worked at First Transit full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Like I said plenty of overtime. If your looking for a job their ALWAYS HIRING. I would constantly see applicants always in the building filling out applications.

    Cons

But it;s very poorly ran. I've worked at plenty of companies and never have i seen so much unprofessionalism.

    Advice to Management

Take a course on how to run a large organization. and do not try to manipulate the contract that employees have with their union. This would often occur on a regular basis.

I have been working at First Transit full-time

    Pros

First Transit invests in its employees at every level. Fairness, honesty, and hard-work are rewarded. The ability to climb the ladder exists depending on your skill and expertise, but also who you know.

    Cons

The organization has stockholders in the UK which puts downward pressure management. The company makes the fair decision virtually all the time, but the pressure to perform monetarily is real.

    Advice to Management

Enable local management to make decisions/changes quicker instead of waiting on regional/corporate approval.

I have been working at First Transit full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Numerous and frequent opportunities to train and grow professionally. Low level of "office BS". The kind of place you could easily see yourself staying at for a number of years.

    Cons

So many meetings. Industry leading in some areas, stuck in the past in others. Could stand to have a slightly "flatter" organization with less Silo-ing.

    Advice to Management

Embrace new technology which will make managing this herculean firm easier. FT is spread over a huge geographic area, and the only way to efficiently run an organization this large is with communications - and new technology makes this easier than ever. Some departments are way better about this than others - emulate the tech pioneers.

    Pros

The opportunities to move up in the company are endless. If you have the drive and determination you will go far.

    Cons

There are no cons that I can think of.

I have been working at First Transit (Less than a year)

    Pros

Management is very approachable and friendly, laid back yet professional. There does seem to be good opportunity for growth within the company if you are a good employee. They're even able to make safety meetings fun.

    Cons

The pay does lean toward the low side. Some bus drivers complain that they don't make enough and that they could be making more money elsewhere and I agree with them. But no one is stopping them from pursuing higher paying jobs. I'm only there because I need to keep the lights on while I find a job in the field I received a college degree in. Since the schedules are seniority-based the lowest man on the totem pole gets a bad schedule.

    Advice to Management

You guys are doing a great job!
