    FirstEnergy - Competitive Energy

Project Manager (Former Employee) Akron, OH

ProsWorked in small teams on highly technical development projects. Was able to see the full company and felt interconnected to the challenges that the business faced. Always felt as though contribution was valued.

ConsSmall team structure, extremely challenging political climate for energy producers using coal fired production. Additional challengs from operating in recent deregulated markets.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue working to bring top talent into the organization. Ensure that employees feel connected, avoid confrontational managemnt styles as this lessens the value from many of the employees.

ProsAverage Pay, good place to get experience but not a place to get paid or have a career.

ConsAverage Pay, expensive benefits, poor management from top to bottom with a selfish greedy CEO that is on his way out due to retirement. A company that is positioning itself to be bought out.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Life at First Energy call center

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) Akron, OH

ProsManagement realizes what a difficult job customer service reps have. There is an excellent management team at the customer service center.

ConsThe biggest complaint would be having to be available for up to 16 hours at a stretch during storms and outages. The reps can't tell the customers anything more than what's available online or on automated voice messaging when outages occur during the night and off hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementShare positive comments with customer service representatives more often, not just negative feedback. Also, please do not monitor every single second of the day for phone reps as it is a very stressful job without having that added. Responsible reps are going to do their job whether or not they're being scrutinized every waking moment.

OK Place to Work - Business Analyst

Business Analyst (Current Employee) Akron, OH

ProsThe company has a nice pension plan, which they are replacing with a 401K style approach for new hires. The company has many experienced leaders who will help if asked.

ConsThe company is constantly announcing layoffs. Upward mobility is limited for the unconnected. Easy to get lost in the shuffle with so many employees. Training documentation is limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop standards for training documentation. Employees are expected to pick up concepts without any formal explanations.

A good company if the Feds don't drive electrical utilities into the ground.

Safety Representative (Current Employee) Akron, OH

ProsGood benefits which still include decent healthcare, pension and 401k. Vacation standard amongst piers. Depending on the office area, the environment is easy to work in.

ConsGovernmental regulation of coal and clean air laws that the EPA admits won't affect carbon emissions would cost utilities billions to enact or they close plants. Business units often have redundant departments

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter support professional development and certification maintenance.

    A good place to work

    Manager (Former Employee) Akron, OH

ProsGood pay and benefits, no pressure to work overtime, good sense of work life balance and normally promote from within

ConsToo much emphasis on who you know as opposed to what you know. Not the easiest place to get integrated into the culture for experienced personnel

    Improvements Needed to Increase Productivity

    Supervisor (Current Employee) Akron, OH

ProsGood pay, pressure is not overwhelming most of the time, good facilities, bigger city job in a small city, easy commute.

ConsOlder male dominated top level management; Many policies are not well thought out and hinder efficient operations; Still struggling and slow at adopting and employing new technologies; Management doesn't listen well, and is out of touch with the front line workings.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to others with experience, and employ lessons learned from others instead of making mistakes on your own. There is significant room for process improvements across the system.

ProsCo- workers, especially those who worked hard to make end meet but did not get recognized for their hard work.

Constoo political. If you work hard but your manager doesn't like you, that's it you're done. Promotion not base on performance but based on who you know. You could be a great worker and work for 15 -20 years, you will stuck in the same position forever.

Advice to Senior Managementreward people for their performance. Get rid of those who under performed.

Fast growing company, with an unfortunate corporate system.

Help Desk Engineer (Former Employee) Akron, OH

ProsCompany stability, benefits, and job stability.

ConsCorporate managing and guidelines. Poor management and selection. Hard work does not capitalize advancements.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart focusing on employees that provide good results and hard work for advancement rather than people that work their way up by knowing the right people and how much they "A" they kiss.

Analyst II (Former Employee) Akron, OH

ProsWhere else you gonna work? It's Akron.

ConsConstant layoffs. Constant strategy shifts. Short-term thinking.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't spend $100M + naming a stadium.
