Great if you are in need of employment and don't mind working long-term temp.

I worked at FirstEnergy as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Excellent training program - 8 weeks. Decent pay through temp service. Employee appreciation days (they had an ice cream truck come one time and gave everyone a small cone).

    Cons

No benefits due to coming in through temp service. Told you would be hired within 3 - 6 months. Worked a year and then had contract extended. Need to work whatever hours they give you and mandatory overtime including weekends when there are outages. Not allowed to take any time off even if you have the flu when you are working as a temp. High stress...calls are monitored, reviewed, and graded. Need to be available to take calls at all times when not on given break or it counts against you. You can't even take a restroom break outside of your scheduled breaks or your stats will go in the red. Meet with supervisor to listen to calls and get coached on how to handle differently (can be a pro and a con).

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, no pressure to work overtime, good sense of work life balance and normally promote from within

    Cons

Too much emphasis on who you know as opposed to what you know. Not the easiest place to get integrated into the culture for experienced personnel

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good pay, fairly good benefits, a lot of good people. I have had the opportunity to work on a lot of important projects. FirstEnergy has a lot of money available to them, and when necessary, they take actions to improve their generating stations.

    Cons

Some managers are focused but others have been very incompetent, bull headed, and very difficult to deal with. Some management decisions have been very poor, and for some projects, a lack of implementation and training after "go live". FirstEnergy tends to just "throw things" at the employees, and let them deal with the issues that result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage their employees to build teams based on systems that are common across the fleet. In some cases, corporate support for some nuclear departments is non-existent, and this needs to be addressed at a high level.

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good pay, pressure is not overwhelming most of the time, good facilities, bigger city job in a small city, easy commute.

    Cons

Older male dominated top level management; Many policies are not well thought out and hinder efficient operations; Still struggling and slow at adopting and employing new technologies; Management doesn't listen well, and is out of touch with the front line workings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to others with experience, and employ lessons learned from others instead of making mistakes on your own. There is significant room for process improvements across the system.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Worked in a nuclear plant. Got lots of cool experience. Pay is very good for a co-op and is based off your year in school and experience. If you show some initiative you'll have a much better overall experience.

    Cons

Everyone seems miserable in the plant. Tons of paperwork. Overly bureaucratic--but I think this comes with the territory (i.e. the nuclear power industry).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the co-ops more structured and larger projects--allow them to flesh these projects out over their term. If you just five them spreadsheet/office work the co-ops will be miserable. After all, the whole point is to potentially recruit them, isn't it?

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The only pros I see is the fact the the union is semi strong and keeps getting the union employees raises. They seem to treat us right also because of the union.

    Cons

Upper management needs to open their eyes and actually get off their high horses and get back to cherishing its employees instead of looking at us like a number. First Energy has gotten to big for their britches.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They have a pension plan, which many companies no longer have.
Many jobs there have a lot of stability built in....electricity is not going away any time soon

    Cons

An almost utter disregard by the parent company to keeping the power grid functional in New Jersey.
Low staff manning will mean a lot of overtime...some people may like this.
A lot of frustration due to knowing you could treat your customers better, but not being allowed to do so due to lack of manpower, or budget restraints.
Be prepared for all credit to roll uphill
You will not be promoted due to your ability, only due to your toeing the company line...as crooked as it may be
If you have strong ethics and morals, you may want to re-consider

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really should listen to your corporate trainers in Ohio....they are actually quite good!
