I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, fairly good benefits, a lot of good people. I have had the opportunity to work on a lot of important projects. FirstEnergy has a lot of money available to them, and when necessary, they take actions to improve their generating stations.

    Cons

Some managers are focused but others have been very incompetent, bull headed, and very difficult to deal with. Some management decisions have been very poor, and for some projects, a lack of implementation and training after "go live". FirstEnergy tends to just "throw things" at the employees, and let them deal with the issues that result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage their employees to build teams based on systems that are common across the fleet. In some cases, corporate support for some nuclear departments is non-existent, and this needs to be addressed at a high level.

I worked at FirstEnergy full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Worked in a nuclear plant. Got lots of cool experience. Pay is very good for a co-op and is based off your year in school and experience. If you show some initiative you'll have a much better overall experience.

    Cons

Everyone seems miserable in the plant. Tons of paperwork. Overly bureaucratic--but I think this comes with the territory (i.e. the nuclear power industry).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the co-ops more structured and larger projects--allow them to flesh these projects out over their term. If you just five them spreadsheet/office work the co-ops will be miserable. After all, the whole point is to potentially recruit them, isn't it?

I have been working at FirstEnergy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, pressure is not overwhelming most of the time, good facilities, bigger city job in a small city, easy commute.

    Cons

Older male dominated top level management; Many policies are not well thought out and hinder efficient operations; Still struggling and slow at adopting and employing new technologies; Management doesn't listen well, and is out of touch with the front line workings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to others with experience, and employ lessons learned from others instead of making mistakes on your own. There is significant room for process improvements across the system.

I worked at FirstEnergy as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Company stability, benefits, and job stability.

    Cons

Corporate managing and guidelines. Poor management and selection. Hard work does not capitalize advancements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start focusing on employees that provide good results and hard work for advancement rather than people that work their way up by knowing the right people and how much they "A" they kiss.

I worked at FirstEnergy as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The travel to all different plants around the north east is fun and makes the work day go fast. It is a good way of networking and being able to keep in contact with as many people as possible. The pay is also very good.

    Cons

Some people are tough nosed people and have to have thick skin. It's 100 percent travel all day everyday. If you don't like to travel do not take this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe hire on more people to decrease the travel

    Pros

They not only generate power, they own some very strategic transmission lines.

    Cons

I moved out of state to begin my career with FE, 4/8/13. Out of nowhere, 7/9/13, they announced they would deactivate our plant in 90 days. They did, and SEVERED us!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When making corp. decisions, take into consideration the effects your decisions will have upon the futures of your loyal employees & their families.

    Pros

Worked with fun people; had the opportunity to work with many different departments on projects

    Cons

Constant cycle of lots of hiring then a lot of layoffs; no work/life balance - expected to work late/weekends to get the job done; not sufficient customer systems for the number of customers expected to be able to manage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
