I have been working at FirstRand as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Entrepreneurial environment. Lots of opportunity to be innovative

    Cons

Facing same turmoil as most other financial institutions - very little security

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great culture (although not consistently applied across all areas)
Talent management and development should be applied throughout all divisions, consistently

Former Employee - Business Unit Head/Director Level in Johannesburg (South Africa)

I worked at FirstRand full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Independence and freedom to excel in a large company. FirstRand has a great culture of owner managers. Each business unit is run independently and autonomously and the management can make decisions. There is no top down approach.

    Cons

The Group needs to consolidate bit more so that each one knows what is happening in the different parts. This is a natural downside to the owner manager approach i a large organization, as some business units then tend to be silos on their own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the independent owner manager approach going, its great

I worked at FirstRand as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The people are generally friendly and helpful, and understanding when there is a problem such as not being able to meet a deadline. The company treats perm and contract staff well, even sending contractors for training.

    Cons

Company is quite disorganised and, in many ways, not at a high level of maturity. Some people are just coasting.

    I worked at FirstRand

    Pros

    Its a great culture.
The experience you gain is very in depth.

    Cons

It requires a sociable person and this could be a con if you are a person that does not like to socialize with your colleagues.
Its not a structured environment and if you are used to strict standard etc, you may find it hard to manage those your self.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

RMB is a great place to work.
Keep on doing what you have been doing with regard to allowing employees their independence.
Try and encourage more adoption of standards with regard to technology and produce more documentation to avoid key man dependencies.

I have been working at FirstRand

    Pros

Staff Rates on Bonds and Vehicle Finance. Free training provided. Educationa loans

    Cons

Beauracratic Management style. Quick to retrench and restructure without listening to alternatives. Senior Management are not held accountable for poor management and performance of respective departments. Unfair incentive scheme.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have regular feedback sessions with staff to ensure that you know what is going on in the office. Request proposals from staff to ensure that you have a bigger picture when making decisions. Introduce alternative employment instead of retrenchment.
