Not what it used to be

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsWorked with very talented colleagues. Employees at FH have the opportunity to work with great clients and produce world-class programs.

ConsToo many people in management without true people management skills. The company is very traditional, doing many things because they've always done them that way and when change is made, it's not meaningful or the energy is directed at things that don't really make much impact in the overall scope. Also, in some roles true advancement opportunities are hard to come by or non-existent.

Frustrating end to an otherwise good experience

    Creative Intern (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsMy time at FH was overall a good learning experience. As a creative intern, I was able to work on projects for big corporate clients and gain experience with the technical side of sharing creative assets. I worked with teams and senior-level creatives to cultivate design solutions while adhering to strict brand standard guidelines, an important skill that I will apply to jobs for the rest of my career. FH also had fun extras for interns including information sessions on skill sets and aspects of FH, weekly snacks, monthly birthday celebrations, and other random rewards.

ConsAt times I felt like a design secretary. This is not a place for someone who is really looking to grow creatively. They want you to do the bare minimum, bill the maximum, and move on. No time to fuss with details or explore solutions. Art directors spoke negatively of each other behind backs and couldn't agree on creative direction. My creative intern coordinator did not even have a final meeting with me as my internship ended.

Pros- Positive relationships with some colleagues
    - Provides exposure to larger clients
    - Good "boot camp" for the agency world

Cons- Highly political, negative, and generally unpleasant working environment
    - Lower salaries than you'd expect from one of the world's largest PR firms
    - Shortsighted leadership, especially in the creative/digital space

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that attitude and enthusiasm for good quality work starts at the top.

    Great exposure, terrible culture

    Public Relations Intern (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

Pros- Learned a great deal about working in a PR agency
    - Did semi-meaningful work
    - Worked with big-name clients
    - Paid internship

Cons- Don't expect to be hired out of your internship
    - Staff works long hours and is not compensated well at the junior level
    - It is very cliquish and archaically corporate
    - Preference for junior-level positions is given to Mizzou graduates and work horses

Advice to Senior ManagementTake better care of your staff, because they're people

    Dlsappointing Employment Experience

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Saint Louis, MO

ProsGreat downtown location close to many amenities, promotion of healthful benefits such as once a week fruit delivery in the work place, purified water, nice kitchens available to staff, on-site yoga, generous vacation policy.

ConsMay be a better employer for those involved in the business of public relations but for those who are in more administrative roles, not so much a desired place of employment. Outdated dress code and severely lacking in diversity of both racial/ethnic staff but also lacking diversity of thought. Encourage all potential new hires to make sure there is a cultural fit between what Fleishman has to offer and what you are seeking. Ask about the number of hours you are expected to work per week as a PR professional before accepting an offer of employment.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at what other companies are doing to attract and retain talent - not only in the PR industry but look at other companies as well. Place more emphasis on career development for support functions. Revisit your dress code. Do something visible and tangible about the lack of racial diversity. Hold all management accountable for beng respectful of others.
