I have been working at Fletcher Allen Health Care for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Co-workers are excellent

    Cons

no flexibility in scheduling, poor nurse to patient ratio, management is detached from the reality of patient care

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should really listen to those who are working in the trenches day in and day out. Cost containment can work with the advice of the people who do the work.

I worked at Fletcher Allen Health Care as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

People are extremely nice and the working environment is pretty laid-back

    Cons

Co-workers care more about family and life beyond work, so the learning curve is not quite steep for a fresh graduate who takes this as a learning opportunity.

I worked at Fletcher Allen Health Care full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

FAHC has great benefits from insurance and retirement to tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Employees on the day shift have to park off-campus and get shuttled in to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some managers need to get involved with employee on a daily basis, but career development has started to facilitate excellent management improvement initiatives.

I have been working at Fletcher Allen Health Care full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Most of the staff is friendly and supportive, depending upon which unit you work on. We have a nursing union within the hospital.

    Cons

Don't count on getting a decent raise as a nurse- the raises don't keep up with the cost of living. There isn't much competition in the area. You can't park on site. You have to park at a satellite parking lot and ride in on an ancient yellow school bus. It can add 20-30 minutes to your commute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please grab a pair of scrubs and follow a nurse on the floor once in a while. I have never seen a manager on the floor working.

I have been working at Fletcher Allen Health Care full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Caring management and descent benefits.

    Cons

There is a gap between what upper management sees as a need for clinical practice and what clinician see as a need. Not a very effective communication between levels of management and staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve managerial viability and the ability to communicate.

I have been working at Fletcher Allen Health Care part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good culture, Benefits, convenient location, good reputation. This is the meaningless sentence that makes me reach my twenty word minimum.

    Cons

Not enough Parking, hierarchical in nature (doctors and nurses think that you're worthless), nutrition department is remedial, not many fulfilling jobs available - most are administrative paper-pushers

I worked at Fletcher Allen Health Care full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good nurse to patient ratios, good benefiits, 12 hr shifts (can be pro or con.)

    Cons

You are just another number to them. Had really awful managers at the time, this is obviously variable by unit. You are always being pointed out for errors and areas to improve, rarely praised for all the hard work you do there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have some understanding of how hard the day to day job is for your employees and give some recognition for it.
