I have been working at Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people are dedicated, intelligent and hardworking. I have been lucky to have good managers all the way up the chain. The work in my area (scientific) is challenging and engaging. Great place for professional growth lots of opportunity to learn.

    Cons

Salary, Salary, Salary! The state in general is not competitive in this area. Merit raises are almost nonexistent. No cost of living raises during lean budget years. When we do receive cost of living raises they are usually around 2% and are set by the legislature. The only way to see significant salary increases is through promotions. Having a tight budget makes managing very challenging at times. As you move up work/life balance shifts more to the working side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication has improved throughout. Keep innovating and moving forward.

I have been working at Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Hardworking and enthusiastic coworkers who believe in the mission statement and care about the quality of services provided to the citizens of the state of Florida. Reasonable benefits package and sympathetic management. Regular exposure to contacts in industry, research, and policy.

    Cons

Compensation is not comparable to industry, University, Federal or other similar agencies in other states. Little to no room for advancement or career growth. Current governor and state legislature are actively hostile towards employee service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management already knows that when (if?) the economy improves they are going to lose many of their employees to industry.
