I worked at Florida Department of Environmental Protection full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working for the FDEP was a wonderful career in public service. Coworkers easily become lifelong friends and make it enjoyable to come to work every day. Most employees are dedicated to the mission of the agency and are truly committed to their role in environmental protection. Benefits are good (although they declined over the years...), and time off is okay, too.

    Cons

Too heavy a reliance on OPS ("temporary") employees in mission critical roles. Layoffs during the economic slump were brutal and added tremendous pressure to those who were left. As with any government job, there are always tons of red tape to wade through to get anything done. Raises were almost unheard of for over 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that the "great ideas" you have at the top don't always work out in reality for those doing the work underneath you. Spend more time getting the real world input from those who will actually be dealing with the "great idea". Also, remember that the agency is NOT a business; this is public service and can't be run as though the dollar is the bottom line.

    Pros

Co-workers / field work. With outside in sunny FL

    Cons

Too much process. Not enough authority to make a "real" difference. Jack of all trades, master of none. Not recognized for expert and on the job experiences that matter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raises, more structure, defined roles. Stop the talk and show with actions.

I have been working at Florida Department of Environmental Protection full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great projects, freedom to explore projects, flexible schedules. Great experience seeing projects from start to finish. they allow employees to be flexible on how they approach their tasks. Good retirement. Many benefits.

    Cons

low pay rates, slow advancement, no raises. They have two tiers of employees: FTE-full time exempt, hard positions to get, and OPS-operational support, no benefits- can be terminated at any time without reason. this creates discontentment between employees because they are treated completely different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide clear paths to success and adhere to it, reward employees who follow the steps to get there and stop passing them up for outsiders.

    Pros

Professional Growth, in my area, was encouraged.
    The People were fantastic.
You are working for the good of everyone in Florida.
    Very good work/like balance.

    Cons

Strategic Goals tend to change every year.
There are some hoops and red tape that you have to go around for purchasing or hiring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has been very good at communicating down the chain to employees. This has only gotten better since I've been employed here.

I worked at Florida Department of Environmental Protection

    Pros

Great benefits and it is very easy to get time off where I worked. Very casual dress code. Enjoyed my office space.

    Cons

Very female dominated dept. Also, alot of cliques, so if your not in the clique, you are screwed from any raises or consideration from being promoted. They assume to bring in new folks instead of promote within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a look at thevtalent you havecand empower them to use their years of experience to really make a difference.

I have been working at Florida Department of Environmental Protection

    Pros

The dedication and comradarie of the work force is really great. Relative job security, but no merit increases and no cost of living raises for the last several years. There is a good retirement plan. Overtime is infrequent, and a 4-day work week is definately a great benefit. Most positions involve a mix of outside and office work that breaks the monotony.

    Cons

Compensation is very poor and petty politics reach down to the lowest level. Retirement is standard pension plan that is hard to find these days. Problem is, this benefit is based upon your top 5 year avarage salaries that are out of touch with the outside world. Don't plan on retiring on a DEP pension and living it up!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If a person has never done the job of people they are supervising, how can they functionally be in charge?

I have been working at Florida Department of Environmental Protection

    Pros

The job is very easy and you can do all of your work for the day in about an hour.

    Cons

The pay is crappy and they threaten pay cuts everytime the budget gets cut even when people have never gotten a raise. They rarely even give cost of living increases anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to stop micro-managing and let people relax, which is the only good part about the job.

    Pros

Protection and balance between business and environmental issues. Conservation.

    Cons

Working for the State of Florida is frustrating due to employee turnover; individuals get trained and move on to higher paying jobs with more benefits...and have less responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that Senior Management knows. Pay and benefits is set by the legislature.
