    Pros

The work can be very enjoyable-- if the experienced professionals are allowed room to breath.

    Cons

Too many young inexperienced attorneys trying to control very experienced attorneys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to morale among professionals before the agency sinks.

    Pros

Very interesting important work for those interested in the public financial services sector. Working with peers is rewarding too, especially if the peers understand the importance of working towards total group success as opposed to forming small "exclusive" groups who do not share the same organizational goals and overall mission.

    Cons

Professional leadership in most divisions greatly needs refreshing-- but not by replacing them with inexperienced people who do not measure up to the high standards required by this agency's important mission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a competent cadre of experienced support staff personnel that is being taken for granted and thus does not feel appreciated for the fine jobs being done by most support staff. When the Legislature refuses to appropriate sufficient money for employee raises (Florida employees have had no salary increases for six or seven years) and instead gives agencies a slush fund to make internal "bonus" decisions, there is a trendancy for some supervisors at DFS to use most if not all the money available to "take care of themselves" first, and then take care of certain long-time "friends" working directly under them.
This greedy behavior adversely affects department morale and will continue to depress performance at all levels.

I have been working at Florida Department of Financial Services

    Pros

They provide an excellent opportunity to understand employees rights. They also provide great benefits.

    Cons

The pay is horrible. Most raises are granted every five years. This is not a company you would want to work for to make a profit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate the waste. The department is top heavy.

I have been working at Florida Department of Financial Services full-time

    Pros

    Good healthcare if you're single.

    Pension is mediocre.

Don't have to take your work home with you.

    Easy job.

    Cons

    No bonuses.

No raises (no, not even cost of living)

Very little chance for career advancement (wait for someone to die/retire)

They rely entirely too much on "on paper experience"

Training is a crash course, you learn on the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let fresh, young faces get some lower level management positions.

I have been working at Florida Department of Financial Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - low stress, great work environment, job security, decent benefits, management in my division is great - no micromanaging, they empower staff and communicate well

    Cons

terrible, shockingly low pay, and absolutely no pay raises

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Okay, so there is never supposedly any money leftover for pay raises, ever. How about letting us work remotely every now and then, so that we can save money on fuel since we haven't had a raise in years?!

I have been working at Florida Department of Financial Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    affordable benefits, fairly secure job

    Cons

low pay, constantly being thrown under the bus by politicians who personify us as state workers sucking at the teet of the hard working citizens of Florida

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stand behind your people and get rid of the ones who are bad so we are not all termed as lazy and non-helpful. also, if you want young, talented people, make government service look good by providing ways to advance for promising employees.

I have been working at Florida Department of Financial Services

    Pros

Great People, Opportunity for advancement, open communication with mangement

    Cons

Relatively low pay (Compared to private industry) but that's to be expected working in state government

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job with creating a comfortable environment and culture for employees. The department could benefit from a higher influx of younger talent with new ideas and perceptions on how to do things.
