    Pros

Mostly everyone has a true passion for the work they are doing. Great benefits.

    Cons

Management doesn't put much effort into staff physical and emotional wellness. You'll be waiting a while for any type of raise.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

9 paid holidays, weekends generally off, (limited) tuition waiver

    Cons

Low pay, low utilization of training/skills, corrupt management and HR system encouraged falsification of data and discouraged employees from emailing HR in order to remain 'off the record'. The general competency of employees varies greatly by department. The majority of the IT department is a joke, but you need them for every little thing because you will have no ability to do anything other than very basic tasks on your computer without an Administrator Password override. Your pay only changes if you are promoted to a new title and there is not adjustment for cost of living across the state. You will be scheduled 9 hours/day if you are full-time, but will often only have half-hour for lunch. You have to code all of your activity to account for every 15 minute increment of the day, but the coding system doesn't even allow for accurate codes so most of the time it's made-up or just pick something relatively close to what you were doing. I have been here less than one year, and plan to get out ASAP.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's nothing you can do, because you are powerless in this structure. Try to maintain morale and actually have integrity rather than submit to the pressures of superiors.

    Pros

    State benefits. State education paid.

    Cons

Just about everything else. Ever-changing rules, protocols, matrix etc. Terrible work environment. 33 eople left in 2 years I was there, including me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for there to be changes in Tallahassee DOH. Top down mentality has to change.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time

    Pros

State holidays, tuition deal, health insurance.

    Cons

State workers demonized by conservatives in general public, low low low pay, institutional and workplace apathy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New, fresh ideas were not encouraged here. Further, program and policy decisions are not always evidence based. Because innovative ideas are not encouraged people got bored and complacent. In short, terribly disappointing.

Health Dept. Policy in Broward County doesn't allow managers or colleagues to provide references when you leave.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of opportunity after the 30% reduction in workforce since Governor Rick Scott was elected. There are a lot of projects on hold that need to be completed so there's a lot to keep you busy.

    Cons

The Broward County Health Department has a 'no reference' policy so if you work there for 3-5 years and decide to leave for a higher paying job, your managers (and colleagues) are not allowed to provide references. It doesn't state that in an employee handbook or anyway I've found in writing, it' s just a policy that HR enforces.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the 'no reference' policy, it's almost impossible to get a job in a hospital or in the medical field without references from your managers or colleges.
