Current Employee – been working at Florida Department of Health as a contractor for more than a year
Pros – If you like to be lazy, not think at work and not get fired for anything, this could be the job for you. Working in the public can be really great at times, the people you work with are very genuine.
Cons – The pay was horrible. I personally love my job, I have short days and most of the time have great moments throughout the day. But to keep this job, I had to get a side job waiting tables like I did all through college. Other people in the same job I have, Health support technician, are far less qualified.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire more qualified people, and pay them better.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at Florida Department of Health full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Opportunity to move up if you are smart and buy into management philosophy. Management that tries to run the Division (MQA) like a business using process management and continuous improvement. Smart people in positions of leadership. An incredible culture that goes out of their way to get the most out of their staff. Many opportunities to be heard by leadership and take on leadership roles. Division is less affected by budget cuts due to being trust funded. Staff is recognized and rewarded by management frequently.
Cons – Politics come into play a lot and you will frequently have to drop everything you are doing to work on a legislative request. Management doesn't do a good enough job of getting rank & file staff to buy into their philosophy (Sterling) and then only teach it when applying for awards. Most of the training offered is very basic and pointless if you have a degree.
Advice to Senior Management – Do a better job of communicating to lower level staff your management philosophy.

Former Employee – worked at Florida Department of Health full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – There are excellent people there who want to make a difference and accomplish good things. If you are just starting your career you will find lots of learning opportunities and some mentors, and perhaps if you stick around and political winds change, you can move yourself up when competence and courage return.
Cons – Managers still there have to tuck their tails and keep their heads low. Current administration treats public sevice with neglect and disdain, and puts only those who don't question authority in executive position. Floridians deserve better.
Advice to Senior Management – I realize that the only way to stick around as a manager nowadays is to keep your mouth shut, but what you gain now you give up with your long term reputation. This time period with the agency will always be tainted.

Current Employee – been working at Florida Department of Health full-time for more than a year
Pros – Maybe Health Insurance premiums--You get to meet clients that truly need the benfits of WIC.
Cons – WIC organization has no structure. Basically a client can go to any office in Pinellas County for assessments and p/u checks, creating a problem when it comes to having files everywhere. Clients usually demand services in a very rude way, don't bring their WIC cards with them, no ID's. Upper management has to change-they need to bring people in with vision, organization, time management skills. There is lack of good training but they expect you to know everything when working on the floor. There is a lot of hostility when you work in the office. I have seeing and hear supervisors complaining about their staff, how lzay they are, etc and won't do anything per retaliation. Workers haven't had a raise in at least, 7 years but yet, their demands are very high. The WIC staff (most of them) are very lazy, they get irate for the smallest things--even the Nutritionists. You try to help and they think you are telling them what to do. It's chaos!! If you care about your job, if you are a hard working person, if you have goals...please, do not apply here! I'll be out soon....Oh, and the pay for Senior Clerk starts at $10.39 and stays the same for ever...
Advice to Senior Management – Management has to change--we know it won't happen, so better not to get a job at WIC.

Former Employee – worked at Florida Department of Health part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – My co-workers and previous supervisors were like a second family; managers were almost always there to hear one of us out, and none of them made me feel stupid for coming to them if/when I encountered distressed calls from dissatisfied callers after they'd been put through the automated messaging system again again
Cons – Sometimes felt we were understaffed on certain days when the phones were backed up for two full days, mainly because they only put two girls on a rotation at a time.
Advice to Senior Management – None - Keep up with the good work!

Current Employee – been working at Florida Department of Health
Pros – Before Gov Scott the best part was the security of state employment, but that's shot to H ... now.
Cons – It's blame the victim town and line the fat cats pockets. Not that we didn't have a lot of that already with double dipping top level bureaucrats using the swinging door to retire then come back as consultants for mega bucks !!! Front line employees pull the load and get no training, no rewards and no appreciation.
Advice to Senior Management – Look for fresh blood and not just family and friends for a different view of making the Department an agency the community can respect and support.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
