I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Fluor is a great place to work, I have worked for other large corporations where upper management's incompetent and ineffective behavior is tolerated or rewarded but technical staff is crucified if they have been unable to read minds or forecast the future. Fluor management accepts that you can only make decisions using the information you have. At Fluor you are expected to work hard, do your best and learn from your and others mistakes, but there are no career damaging repercussions when things don't t always go perfectly as planned. In short they accept that we are all human.
Cons – Even if you approach your manager they may not provide guidance on career path, even if you share your interests and strengths. There seems no desire to develop long term career growth. For us 25+ year ppl who have been learning new technology since we worked with punch cards in the university in the 70's, many need to keep learning and growing and remaining a critical contributor to their organization. For the managers w/ 25+ years at Fluor there is a tendency to prefer to avoid creating any waves leaving competent staff in their positions.
Advice to Senior Management – Make better use of Fluor resources during the project development phase. Our theme is "One Fluor", this needs to be our mantra from project inception, to procurement and construction, to project completion. It appears that all the different players on a project are encouraged to lower costs, which on the surface appears to be a good thing. It may be a great idea but there needs to be someone looking at the "big picture" considering how a cost reduction in one area may precipitate a higher cost increase in another area that may or may not be evident until the project is in full swing. My question is, was this cost reduction cost effective. This fanaticism on cost savings may be counterproductive when heroic measures or field changes must be developed at site or what I consider the clients "stage". The trouble shooter sent in to save the day may be doing a great job, making real progress, but the client still most likely perceives the recovery not as a success but rather a mitigation of failure.

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Fluor is a great place to work.
The TOWP (Time Off With Pay) is an excellent benefit.
The 9/80 work schedule is great, with every other Friday off.
Cons – It is very cylical. When it is booming it is great. When there is a down-turn it is no so good. However, I do believe Fluor tries to keep GOOD employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Tell them what is going on.... Get more work... In order to keep your employees. Other wise the the Other EPC companies will hire all of your well trained people. I've heard this old saying many times on the street: "Fluor trains them, we hire them".

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Competitive salary offered. Excellent Knowledge Online tool.
Cons – High turn-over rate. Lack flexibility. Separate office locations resulted in lack of employee interactions and unity.
Advice to Senior Management – Unite employees from different offices. Low moral means low or bad quality productivity.

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Very good people to work with, at least at this site. Very good manager. Nice and easy to work with. Sensible and reasonable. Pays well for an internship. Includes per diem. Nobody running around trying to slit each other's throats.
Cons – Far away from home for me. May not get the salary I want if I get hired when I graduate. Other than that. Really no down side.
Advice to Senior Management – Great job. Keep me in mind when I graduate next year. I think Fluor is a place where I can make a great contribution and accomplish my career goals.

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Good Compay to work for. Managers are very comprehensive and understaning of personal situations. Very family oriented. Good opportunities to work international.
Cons – Yearly employe assesments are not taken a seriously as they should. A company like this should offer more benefits to employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Take care of potential employees in terms of compensation and career growth. A lot of potential employees around that have not been recognized.

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Fluor has some of the most challenging projects, in some of the most challenging locations. Fluor also has one of the industries highest compensation scales. There Time Off With Pay or vacation is nice because it is so flexible to accommodate the needs of the employees. There is no "use or loose it" with the vacation. The benefits are good. There might be some better benefits out there, but not too many places offer better, along with the same levels of compensation.
The company does get it's fair share of work, and values their employees. If you pull your weight, they will do what they can to keep you working. If you coast or don't do your work, they will send you on your way. They strive to improve their processes, and seek employee involvement and encourage training and skill development to improve the value to their clients.
Cons – Fluor does not have a bench or overhead for people between projects. All hours for project type employees have to be billable to the projects. (typical for a lot of EPC companies)
The business line management and project management is sometimes very "clicky" and not open to accepting people they don't know onto their projects. New employees have a difficult time becoming accepted quickly. You might have to take a position with less responsibility until the manager has had an opportunity to see how you perform and access your talents for themselves. It is thesame between the business lines. People from one business group will not take people from other groups with out some strong endorsements from others, who's opinion is respected. Therefore, movement to open positions across the companies business lines can be difficult.
Advice to Senior Management – Management should strive to have managers look at all personnel to identify employees with hidden, raw or under-developed talents that could be harnessed for a more effective work force. I have personally run into people who were not being properly utilized, only because it might take some extra time to redirect their talents, and that is not a billable activity or something they wanted to get into.

I have been working at Fluor
Pros – Intern experience is heavily based on the department in which you work. My experience was good. I mainly learned about the EPC industry. Excellent facilities at the Houston location.
Cons – I was not given the technical challenge I would have liked as an engineering intern. Loads of data entry as an intern.
Advice to Senior Management – Create a more challenging intern program. Interns should leave the job not only with greater understanding of industry but also with lessons learned in their field.

I worked at Fluor
Pros – Fluor is a huge company: that's both its strength and its weakness. The company employs thousands of engineers of numerous types (chemical, process, piping, etc.). Most employees are able to maintain a decent work-life balance, the pay is good, benefits hold up comparatively well within the job market, and the workplace environment is casual and welcoming.
Cons – Owing to the enormousness of the company, the mid-managerial levels have swelled to silly proportions. At times, the bureaucratic stodginess almost resembles that of a large government agency, with all its pointless and tiresome regulations and lack of movement on even simple requests. In addition, Fluor's employment model is built on a project basis: Engineers (and support staff) move from project to project---literally move, sometimes from the Irvine campus to the Aliso Viejo campus to the Long Beach campus. For those employees who seek a more stable long term in a single place, this can prove problematic. Another problem is with the engineering and construction industry itself: it's typically seasonal. This means that you might not pick up another project immediately after you finish your current project, which would force you to collect unemployment until Fluor calls you back in again.
Advice to Senior Management – The 1970s model of huge encrustations of mid-management is obsolescent in this age of post-recession lean and mean. Workers usually do just as well, if not better, without dozens of supervisors to report to. Streamline the managerial model and make everyone happier and more productive.
