Waterloo, ON (Canada)

Current Employee – been working at Focus for Ethnic Women part-time for more than 3 years

ProsWomen and immigrant positive atmosphere. No negative male-dominated office culture. Small enough to know all staff and maintain friendly acquaintances. The staff are committed to supporting women, immigrants, and visible minorities succeed despite declining support from funders and community. Front-line work with clients is very fulfilling and meaningful. New office is a great space. Programming is effective and good for the community.

ConsNo benefits. Wage freeze. Fixed one-year contracts and staff turnover. Disconnect between Board's direction and the work of Staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not forget the importance of staff and agency morale in the day to day work.

Former Employee – worked at Focus for Ethnic Women full-time for less than a year

ProsThe staff are absolutely dedicated to delivering the agency's programs. The services are invaluable to immigrant women and most of all are free!

ConsThe Management team is not responsive to the needs of the staff. The Board also seem complicit to the low morale and the high turnover rate of staff.

Annual contracts - must re-apply for your job each year and be on a 3 month probation each time. No pay raises, health benefits or employee retirement fund.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect the diversity of values, opinions, and input provided by your staff.
