    Pros

Awesome company! Loved the culture and leadership.

Not many to speak of. They are supporting change in education.

    Advice to Management

    Keep focusing on technology

I worked at Follett Software Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, Casual Dress Attire, Ping Pong & Foosball, Drinks, Events, Work from home opportunities, Good co workers.

    Cons

There isn't too much room to grow at the moment (lots of budget cuts (as of May 2015)). Product owners lead projects towards the wrong direction. Lots of bugs in the software that aren't being addressed. Too much focus put on churning out new features and not fixing current issues.

    Advice to Management

Create more collaboration and cross team projects. Many talented people on staff that aren't getting their voices or ideas heard. Encourage employees to take on tasks / tackle obstacles. Focus on making a better performing less buggy software. Sometimes it seems focus is on new features and not enough on stability. Use talent and expertise from within the company instead of hiring outside agencies.

    Pros

This is one of the most culturally relaxed places you can work as a software developer. It has more of a feeling of hanging out with friends than being at a job. There are a few people that are real gems working here, and getting to know them was priceless.

    Cons

The main issue with Follett Software Company is that management hands all its trust of technical decisions in the hands of a few high-level employees and managers that do not have the ability to make these decisions. Then the software developers are forced to bolt bad designs together or engage in lengthy and stressful workarounds. Additionally, hard working individuals are usually shamed for being such, or at least for working too well on company projects. On the flip side, the smartest folks on the team that have stayed at Follett longer than 5 years take advantage of this to put more attention on personal side projects. This can be an advantage to many, but I had a difficult time with an expectation of not doing my best.

    Advice to Management

Upper management already knows who the choke holds on bad technical decisions are, and those people will not change or grow in their abilities at this point. Swallow your pride and fire them. You can do so gracefully and with a nice package, as the cost of even 1 year severance each will be quickly made up when you replace them with someone better able to handle those reigns.

I have been working at Follett Software Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They have a casual dress code, a ping pong table, and a foosball table, for those needing a break. The teams work well together and there's some work-from-home options. If you need to leave early, they're ok with that, as long as you make up your hours. Easy to use your PTO (paid time off) when you need to.

    Cons

If you're a software dev, beware that you'll basically be a coding monkey. They tell you what they want, how they want it, where it goes, and sometimes even how to do it. If you are creative and a go-getter, don't bother working here, because those talents will be ignored. Also, don't bother making requests for any type of changes, because it won't happen. The projects keep being re-written, and it's just plain boring. We used to get bonuses every year with producing high quality software, and that's been taken away by the new CEO. Getting a bonus is a toss up - and even if we get one, it isn't as high as it used to be. Salary is terrible too.

    Advice to Management

Separate off the development department how it used to be. Give us back our yearly bonuses, as a given. I can assure you the quality of software will be much higher (because then we will actually care). Happiness in the department will be restored. Otherwise, you'll probably lose a lot of long-term employees.

    Pros

Experienced employees willing to help one another; great group of people, well-bonded and customer focused

    Cons

Very little management oversight taking place. People with no management experience thrown into the position. Training is needed.

    Advice to Management

Please do not place inexperienced people into manager roles without training

    Pros

Work-life balance is great as they have flex time which allows you to work longer some days to get off earlier on another.

    Cons

The bonus structure has been removed for non sales positions. Advancement is limited as there were numerous layoffs over the past few years.

    Pros

Great brand, long history, some great people have passed through here and wonderful relationships with vendor community

    Cons

Family owned now working against them, lack of loyalty to associates, politics running the show

    Advice to Management

Focus on and actually live values, not lip service, focus on core competencies and jettison the rest... stop making associates pay for the lack of results of a strategy being poorly executed.

I worked at Follett Software Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong company history and brand; many employees are very loyal; regular departures create opportunities for advancement

    Cons

Follett Software has primarily been about a single product--library management. Revenue from this product line has been declining for several years due to a lack of new sales. The company has really struggled to develop new products that support the vision and direction outlined by strategy executives.

I have been working at Follett Software Company full-time

    Pros

"Regular" employees work very hard and are good people. Paid time off is generous, however workload is so great that it is difficult to break away.

    Cons

Poor strategic planning Upper management has unrealistic expectations and is very disconnected Very low morale amongst employees Inadequate tools to do job - company has merged three divisions and did get get proper systems in place first, which is causing many issues internally Company is not loyal to employees and does not seem to value those that work hard Low pay Good people continue to resign, leaving minimal resources and greater room for inaccuracies

    Advice to Management

Get more involved in the day to day and you will realize the issues. Recognize employees for hard work. Stop making decisions without understanding the full impact. Those that work the hardest only receive more work. Hardworking, valuable, loyal employees are going to continue to give up on the company because it is doing everything to promote a toxic workplace. Human Resource department is practically nonexistent and does not provide assistance to employees. They defer all issues and questions to Corporate or department management.
