I have been working at Fontana USD part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As mentioned earlier, it is a great setting to work with students and learn each of them individually. AVID teachers are wonderful and value the tutors. The pay rate is good.

    Cons

There are some inconsistencies with administration. If someone is a college student, it may be a bit difficult to work around one's school schedule and work schedule.

    Advice to Management

Have more flexibility and understanding for the college student's schedule.

    Pros

Great vacation, sick time, and holiday policies (I was a 12-month employee).

    Cons

Compensation was below average, being a member of a union with pre-programed raises made it hard since there was no reward for performance.

    Advice to Management

Have work life not infringe on personal time was a big plus.

  6. Pleasant experience, however benefits are non-existent for ROP part-time teachers who actually work full time hours

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, Steady sub assignments if your are willing to cover Elementary, Middle, High, and Special Education teaching contexts, if you enjoy working with students of varying ages, attitudes, and learning abilities you will enjoy the job.

    Cons

Unless you are willing to work two jobs, this job is no way to make a living. Base pay per deim is lowest in S.B. county. You also have no benefits, if you dont work you dont get paid, you wont have access to medical insurance, sick days, vacation pay, or retirement plans. You are a per deim as needed employee and are very expendable.

    Advice to Management

    none.

    Pros

Friendly environment and great management support.

    Cons

Budget problems due to State cut backs. Union rules protect employees based on seniority not competence.

    Advice to Management

Create more formal reviews and discipline procedures, so incompetent and unmotivated employees can be laid off instead of the last hired.

    Pros

YOu get great benefits (as do most government employees) and you get more vacation and holidays than most do. Many top managers seem to want to do better.

    Cons

Little or no training for new employees, just dump you into your job. Management tolerates employees with poor skills or bad work ethics while laying off hard-working employees. Management seems to think it can attract quality employees by only offering ten-month positions and usually less than 8 hours per day.

    Advice to Management

Look at each employees with the mindset of who is most valuable and really contributions to the success of the district instead of pure senority. Fire those employees who do stupid and dangerous things instead of doing nothing because your don't want to go thru the hassle of paperwork to fire them.
