Personal Assistant

Administrator (Current Employee)
Laindon, England (UK)

I have been working at Ford Motor Company (UK) as a contractor for more than a year

ProsGreat relaxed atmosphere, good salary, friendly collegues staff members

ConsYou are treated different to permanent employees, never have a chance to become a Ford Employee unless you have a degree even if its a cleaning degree, to many people who like to show you they are above you! Should treat all employees the same and not freeze them out!

Advice to Senior Managementpraise and recognise all staff members, contract permanent etc, ensure all are treated the same!
take a chance and if someone has been there a while and doing a good job offer them a job and stability!

Useful experience but definately not somewhere I'd want to stay for long

Project Engineer (Former Employee)
Basildon, East of England, England (UK)

I worked at Ford Motor Company (UK) as a contractor for more than a year

ProsBeing an car OEM there is a lot you can get experience of such as working on programmes for different markets, working with a lot of people from different countries as well as the various technical areas (planning, R&D, development, production, costs, volumes, etc.)

ConsA lot of meetings which accomplish little. Some people seem to have excessive work loads, others very little. Many managers seem to be in the position for reasons other than ability.

Worst of all, there a lot of people who have been there a long time, perhaps envious of the degree-level younger staff and generally disillusioned with their own lives and careers, who are a pain to work with. A lot of younger employees then seem to either fall into a similar attitude or get frustrated and leave.

Blue Chip, albeit big and silo mentality

Manager In Manufacturing Org (LL6) (Current Employee)
Basildon, East of England, England (UK)

I have been working at Ford Motor Company (UK)

ProsRespectful of employees.
Long term stability.
Good for young entrants, as there are plenty of opportunities for learning and to see good established practices/processes.
Well established policies.
Global reach, increasingly global organisation.
International outlook, interantional workforce. Respect for nationalities, colours, religions, etc.

ConsLong term culture of yes men towards bosses
Salaries are very difficult to negotiate as they depend on yearly generic set inflation targets and obscure and rather rare upward movements among levels.
Mid-High ranks have been loosing earning powerin relation with low ranks, thus moving up is not necesarily a good thing
Rural locations far from Culture.
Gray- Dilbelrt like way of life. No emotions - no personal relations. Most people work to life so work is not seen as a source of enjoyment. Life is something that happens outside
Lack of age diversity

Advice to Senior ManagementPush for unconfortable truths to come out and be accepted. Enourage courage!
Develop internal markets for people. Announce openings and employee profiles, and actively help employees to find their way in new positions.
Support learning for employees (internal/external training) as well as organisational learning by kaizen attitude (which means candid assesessment. CANDID!

A good place to work, friendly environment, great work-life balance.

Development Engineer (Former Employee)
Basildon, South East England, England (UK)

I worked at Ford Motor Company (UK)

ProsFord Motor Company is a company that promotes high level of work ethics starting from the recruitment process. At Ford you will find a very friendly work environment and your colleagues might really become your closest friends. In the engineering area the manager are usually people that spent all their life working for Ford and that have all the steps to that position; therefore they are very competent and professional.
The job site is very good: you get a gym, a coffee bar, a tailor, newspapers, a lounge, a travel office, a lake where is nice to have lunch during summer, a good canteen, a kindergarten. The benefits package is good too.

ConsIf you are inexperienced you might not receive the training that you need and you could struggle to get to the right level. When you enter Ford you are supposed to know your job and if you don't, lean it quickly. Innovative solutions take a very long time to be accepted and implemented.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen deciding on career advancements give more weight to meritocracy and less on seniority.

Contracting with Ford UK

Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Laindon, England (UK)

I have been working at Ford Motor Company (UK)

ProsFlexibility - as long as you can finish your workload on time, flexibility to do other things.
Great communication between teams and departments.
you can be employed as an agency worker for years within the same department

ConsNo job promotion if you are an agency worker.
Cannot make use of any training or activities unless you are an permanent employee

Advice to Senior ManagementSome of your agency workers that have been with you for years (3years plus) should be offered permanent positions as they know the ins and out of the business and you would not risk losing them as there'll be job security.

Industrial powerhouse with well established processes and low responsiveness to employees development

Supervisor In Manufacturing Analysis (Current Employee)
Basildon, South East England, England (UK)

I have been working at Ford Motor Company (UK)

ProsA respect driven environment. Once in it is very secure. A lot of work to be done and interesting things. It is much better for the lower you are on the hierarchy, as there is so much to learn from the complexity of the environment. good international environment to work, with opportunites to mix with Germans, Spaniards, Romanians, Turkish, NorthAmericans, etc. Good line of product gaining more and more recognition

ConsRisk aversion in desicion making that gets under the skin. Work in Silos, so once in an area it is dificult to move. Search for specialists, so long term advancement is not good. Good salaries to basic jobs, low for bigger ones. No interest on developing employees beyond the obvious needs of the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on your people skills and growth. Give power and accountability to HR beyond the obvious admin tasks ( so far is too much a pupet of Senior Mgmt)
