I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are some good people here

    Cons

The good people are often driven out, people who LOOK different are put on diversity committees (even if they know nothing about it), the pay is so very low and the local housing is horrible and costly, there are limited social and community opportunities, they need a good AUDIT to see where some of the funding is going.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit or retire

A great place to jump start a career, but severely understaffed

I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    - Students most definitely come first
    - Plenty of self-direction
    - I never feel like a "cog in the machine"
    - Freedom of innovation, creativity
    - Good chance of making a difference or impact
    - You can see the results of your work; satisfying
    - Great health & vacation benefits; sick leave

There may be fewer pros listed, but they're big-ticket items in my book. I would recommend FHSU as a great place for those looking to jump-start a career, or those who live in the area and desire a stable workplace.

    Cons

    - Growth of University mostly due to sacrifices & dedication of employees
    - Critical roles have no backup; severe brain drain & scrambling when employees leave
    - Work/life balance issues for many roles while others cruise Facebook all day
    - No cohesive direction from administration
    - Money is rarely available for projects until it's an emergency
    - Salaries vary wildly between & within departments
    - New hires often paid better than existing employees
    - Administration blatantly ignores technical expertise
    - Morale in IT department can be likened to hospital ward; overall campus morale low
    - Career advancement potential low for unclassified non-teaching staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Listen to your people. If you're not hearing anything, you probably aren't asking.
    - Share your plans with the campus. Flexibility need not be sacrificed in doing so.
    - It's OK to tap into savings once in awhile for more than just emergencies.
    - Build a salary structure and stick to it. The salary disparity is a morale killer.
    - Morale is low, but there doesn't seem to be any plan to improve it.

I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some good people here (but they are undervalued)

    Cons

Men are promoted and given better assignments over women in an overtly manner and women are questioned at every step,
Minorities are undervalued or used because of their status not because of their skills
Individuals who LOOK foreign are put on committees for diversity and most do not know anything about it,
Money is moved around to cover fiscal irresponsibility
    The town is very expensive
There is a large amount of Radon here that is at high levels in over 90% of the homes (one professor died of lung cancer and his house tested 12!)
    (I could go on....)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire outsiders with knowledge

I have been working at Fort Hays State University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1. Great faculty who are willing to go the extra mile to support student learning
    2. Hammond is retiring
    3. Amazing webinar selection
    4. Great community to grow kids

    Cons

    1. Hold department administrators accountable for their flops
    2. Replace long tenured, senior idiots who do not know their jobs
    3. Technology choices are unsupported. I cannot get through the helpdesk as a faculty but go through CTELT... Useless unit
    4. FHSU only cares about enrollment and FHSU claims they have 100% pass rate in their programs.
    5. Total lack of integrity and academic rigor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Well, read the CONS.
    2. Move to K-State
    3. Get better IT support
    4. Get rid of CTELT
