    So-so working environment, friendly co-workers

    Junior Software Developer (Current Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

ProsVery friendly co-workers, annual company-paid group outing.
Job is easy, no pressure, seldom working overtime. Work hours are somewhat flexible, can come in as late as 10am.
Every employee (developers at least) gets two new computers.
Free dinner is provided if you stay until 7pm.

ConsPoor management compared to the company I worked at before. They don't seem to know how to manage big software projects well.
The office is poorly located in the heart of the crows' world. If you go to work on foot, you will need to navigate through bird droppings, while breathing them in the air. Do a search for 'crows burnaby' and you'll know what I mean.
There seems to be a shortage of men's washroom in the building since 80% of the employees are males. Never expect to enjoy the washroom alone if you are a male.
The company's culture is Chinese dominant, if you do not speak Mandarin, you might find it a bit hard to fit in.
The company is a little cheap in some ways - The computers don't come with pre-installed Microsoft Office or Outlook. The employees have to assemble the desktops by themselves on their first day (I feel this should be the job of the IT department, but seems like this office doesn't even have one)
I wouldn't say the pay is low, but it can definitely be higher for a medium-sized company.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the managers attend special training courses as to how to manage software development, or hire competent managers.
Hire someone to clean up the bird droppings around the office every day.

Good company, but needs a lot of work to be a "real" company

    Management (Current Employee)
    Burnaby, BC (Canada)

    ProsDecent wages
Great people to work with (Burnaby, BC)
Great stock options for earlier employees
Excellent range of products that sell well

ConsPoor management skills: Lack of communication, no performance reviews, evaluations and career path planning, does not value employees
No sense of loyalty and respect - if they do not need you anymore, you are either demoted or coerced to resign
Highly political - you have to be part of the right clique to succeed. Different regions are in a political warfare against each other
Work environment could be better, can be more tidy
    Lack of team building events

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up your management team! VP's and upper management need to get their acts together. Hire leaders that value and respect their subordinates. Political tension between regions is a sure way to drive the company down. Streamline process and procedures to have uniformity on all regions. As a global company, all regions need to be consistent with policies and procedures, otherwise the customers get confused.
